The Pecos League recently caught up

The Pecos League recently caught up with Brian Ramirez who was the Las Cruces Vaqueros leading hitter in 2010. Brian played for the Invaders in 2011 and was Pecos League Post Season MVP with several clutch home runs for the Invaders. He was the offensive leader of the first Pecos League Championship Team. Brian finished his Pecos League career in 2012 with the Invaders. He had another big year for the Invaders at the plate. In the 2013 season Brian went to Europe to play and below is his story.

What was the team that you played for and league that you played for?

I played for the Rouen Huskies in the French Elite League.

How was your experience in France? Would you encourage other Pecos League Players that age out to consider going to Europe to play?

Playing in France was an incredible experience and I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to play baseball overseas and travel in Europe. I would definitely recommend it to any player not just players who have aged out in the Pecos League. It could allow a player with no previous professional looking for a chance to play and gain experience to get a full season of pro experience overseas.

Differences between playing in France and US?

There are a few differences between baseball in the US and France. One difference is the quality of baseball being played. In France the quality is not as good as it is here but the league is still competitive and fun. Another difference is the fan base and support. Baseball is still growing in France and is not a widely known sport to most people. The teams are not as large as well. Most teams only have 15 players where in the US teams have a 25 or 30 man roster.

How were fields/and how often do you play in France?

Surprisingly the fields are decent in France. Most fields in the French League are artificial turf infields and grass outfields. As an infielder I was happy because it means no bad hops.

You seem to win championships every where you go? Why is this?

I guess I am just lucky. I have been fortunate to find myself on two winning teams over my career. My team in France was very similar to the Roswell team in 2011. We had great team chemistry and just gelled at the right time. Plus a little luck is always needed and both Roswell in 11 and Rouen last season had to win huge elimination games when needed and we did.

The Arizona Diamondbacks saved money by trading reliever Heath Bell and the roughly $6.5 million he was owed for 2014, but it came at the cost of pitching prospect David Holmberg.

In a complicated three-team deal, the Diamondbacks sent Bell to the Tampa Bay Rays and Holmberg to the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange, they acquired low-level pitching prospect Justin Choate and a player to be named later.

Along with Bell, the Rays also are receiving money – the Diamondbacks reportedly are including $500,000 in the deal – and catcher Ryan Hanigan.

The Diamondbacks are expecting to use the money they saved to upgrade their starting rotation or add a power bat to the lineup.

Holmberg, acquired as part of the Edwin Jackson/Daniel Hudson deal with the White Sox in July 2010, is viewed as a potential back-of-the-rotation starting pitcher. He posted a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts for Double-A Mobile and has a 3.40 ERA in his minor league career, in which he has averaged eight strikeouts, compared to only 2.5 walks, per nine innings.

Chris Ebright will manage the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in the Northwoods League. Chris was the 2013 Pecos League Manager of the year and lead the Invaders to the Pecos League Championship. He had the most players promoted in the league and set the all time Pecos League Regular Season Wins Record of 50.

Chris has accepted a full time coaching job (September-April) in Michigan and it will be much closer to home for his summer off season. Wisconsin Rapids is 175 miles Northwest of Milwaukee. The Northwoods League is a summer baseball league comprised of teams of the top college players from across the nation and North America. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid (this preserves their NCAA eligibility). Each team is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.

Pecos League Commissioner Andrew Dunn "Chris was a complete success in the Pecos League from Day 1. He put together the best team was very well liked in the community and promoted his players at the end of the season. We knew with Chris getting married and getting the job in Michigan it would be a long shot to get him back in New Mexico in 2014. The Rafters will be glad with Chris."

The Invaders will begin their coaching search in September and will have a new manager named by October 1, 2013. The Invaders open the 2014 season in Alamogordo against the White Sands Pupfish on May 14th, 2014 at 10AM at the yearly school kids game.

ROSWELL — The Invaders completed a four game sweep of Raton Saturday with an 8-3 win over the Osos at Joe Bauman Park.

It was just another day at the office for Roswell, which got a seven-inning pitching performance from Ed Kohout, with Ryan Richardson wrapping up the final two.

“Our pitchers did what they’re supposed to do, and actually all around, pitching, hitting and defense (was good),” said Invader manager Chris Ebright. “Tonight I think we had one error. Last night I think we had one and the night before we had zero. So that gives our pitchers confidence to throw the ball over the plate and we’re starting to come around. The guys are getting really excited. They’re having fun. We just take things one day at a time.”

Raton’s pitching improved as the series went on, but when the Osos threw well, they couldn’t field.

ROSWELL -- Ratons pitching staff looked a lot better Friday night than they have in a while, but this time errors betrayed them, letting Roswell continue its winning streak with a 9-2 victory. As the score shows, though, there was strong pitching from both sides, with Jonathan Sa allowing only one Oso run on four hits and five strikeouts.

"Sa did a great job," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "He gave us seven strong innings and thats what we ask from our pitchers and he did great. Thats all you can ask for."

Raton had to make a last-minute pitching change, putting in Larry Rodriguez -- just brought over from the Fuego -- to start.

"Our starting pitcher got extremely sick right before the game, so I basically had to cobble together a pitching staff at the very last minute. And when I say last minute, I mean last minute," said Raton manager Ray Hancock. "Thats what I was doing. But actually we didnt look too bad, per se. Had the first inning, which cost us four runs, but Larry came in and said he would try to give us the best he had and he gave us the best he had on short notice."

The Roswell first-inning runs came when Ryan Normoyle walked, Andrew Deeds was hit, then, after the second out came on a fielders choice, Mike McCarthy walked to load the bases and Goose Kallunki double, scoring three. Roger Bernal followed that with an RBI single, and the Invaders were up 4-0.

They added another run in the third when Deeds singled, stole second and came home on an error, and three more in the fourth when Sa reached on a fielders choice, Chad Kruse singled, Normoyle doubled them in then came home on a Deeds double.

The Osos broke the Sa shutout in the top of the fourth when Westley Jones and Aaron Carman singled and Jones came in on a pair of outs.

Cameron Powers came in for Rodriguez in the fourth and Taft in the sixth, and along with Sa, who continued his mastery of the mound, the pitchers kept the hitters mostly off base. Roswell broke that drought in the seventh when two Raton errors betrayed reliever Ivan Velasquez, giving the Invaders their ninth run.

Those errors could have been due, in part, to the fact the rain was coming down pretty hard during the bottom of the seventh. The wind and lightning had started moving in about an inning earlier, but play was never stopped and it let up after about 15 minutes.

"We were just going to keep going," Ebright said of the rain. "We had the main groundskeeper here, and he was looking at the radar letting us know we were just getting the edge of it. And the umpires did a great job keeping us out there and letting us finish the game."

Jesus Carlos came in for Roswell in the eighth, allowing the games final run when Stedman Smith singled, stole second and came in on a Carman RBI.

While Sa only gave up six hits, Carlos one and closer Ryan Rogers none -- for seven total hits -- the five Raton pitchers only allowed 11, with only three of the Roswell runs earned.

"Made a couple of errors that killed us," Hancock said. "Weve kept our errors down, but when we have them, we have them in a real untimely fashion."

While the Invaders continued to take advantage of the other teams mistakes, Ebright had good words about the Oso pitching.

"We saw Larry Rodriguez again from Santa Fe. We just saw him three days ago. Yeah, theyre not bad," he said. "They brought in the kid from Mexico (Velasquez) and he threw strikes. Hes a competitor. Hes going to do well for them. Then they threw in their closer, I guess to get work tonight. Richard Suniga, and he throws hard for a little guy. Theyre going to start putting it together and theyre going to start beating some people."

Ebright can only hope thats not Saturday, when the teams meet for the final game in the series before both head up north beginning Sunday, Raton back home and the Invaders to Taos.

ROSWELL -- The Invaders continued their torrid pace Thursday, getting their seventh-straight victory with a 17-5 win over Raton. But despite the fact Oso manager Ray Hancock said Wednesday night that his squad had no pitching left, starter Will Casey didnt do too badly.

"It wasnt too bad, but Roswell is just better," the manager said. "Bottom line is, you just cant keep putting numbers up there every inning and not expect to lose. You just cant keep giving runs every inning and think we have a chance. Its impossible. The good part is we did hit. We got 11 hits."

While the Invaders had 19, and capitalized on most of those.

"Theyve always been a good hitting team," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright of Raton. "Heck, they got 11 hit tonight and you know, the situations they needed to get hits at they either hit it right at our guys or a pitcher finally made a good pitch. I tell you what. They get a couple more arms, because I know theyre short on them, theyre going to beat some people."

Through four innings, the Osos stayed with the No. 1 team.

After Roswell went up 4-0 in the bottom of the first -- scoring when Ryan Normoyle singled, Andrew Deeds was hit, Vincent Mejia singled and Mike McCarthy homered -- and one in the second when Reggie Taylor singled, stole second and came home on a Deeds single -- the Osos battled back.

They closed the gap to 5-3 in the fourth when Zach Kreegar walked; Louie Saenz singled; Westley Jones hit a sacrifice fly; Matt Lynch walked and Nicholas Hinojo and Casey each singled.

Roswell added one in the bottom of the stanza on Normoyles ninth home run of the year, and three in the fifth when Goose Kallunki walked, Roger Bernal singled, Taylor tripled and Chad Kruse singled.

Normoyle continued his hot hitting -- he was 3-for-6 with three runs and 2 RBI -- but said he isnt doing anything differently.

"Im just seeing the ball better," the left fielder said. "I guess it just took a little time to make an adjustment, but I guess Ive done that."

The home run, Ebright said, was the real deal. "This is a regular sized ball park and he hit it to opposite field over the 380 sign, so when youre on, youre on. Were just going to keep riding it and good for him. His hard works paying off. He shows up early every single day and hits. I"m happy for him."

"I was just looking for one pitch, Normoyle said. "I was looking for a fastball and I got it. Luckily I made contact and hit it out."

Raton added one more run in the sixth when Jones singled, Hinojo walked and pinch hitter Travis Fuquay hit an RBI single, then Oso reliever Derek Sampell set Roswell down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

The seven was when things finally got away from the Osos, as the Invaders scored sin runs on five hits -- four singles and a grand slam home run by Mejia, his second of the season.

"(I was) just looking for something high," Mejias said of the shot. "I saw (Sampell) when he was warming up. He was elevating his curve ball so thats exactly what I was sitting on. Sure enough, he threw me one and I took advantage of it."

Roswell got their last two runs in the eighth when Kallunki doubled, Bernal singled and both scored on the only Raton error of the night, putting Normoyle at first.

And the top of the ninth showed why it wont take much for the Osos to be successful, as they added one more run on a Stedman Smith double and Vince Smalelli single, then loaded the bases and left them that way, unable to get the timely hits.

"Just about every inning we left two or three (runners), which is killing us," Hancock said. "I told them before the game started we had to start taking more pitches, because especially last night, their pitcher had a couple of innings where he only threw like six pitches. Thats crazy. Weve got to take more pitchers, which I think it actually helped us tonight. But even so, we had one error out of all that. Our defense was a good as we could get and our offense is actually pretty good. We got 11 hits off of Roswell, which is a very good team."

"Theyre going to hit and their hitting keeps them in games," Ebright said. "We just got lucky tonight in where their 11 hits, they didnt get them in situations they needed them.

"We struck the last guy out and Dakota (Laufenberg), he battled. Hes coming around. Hes still not there yet, but hes coming around."

The one bright spot for the Osos is a trade with Santa Fe that sends them Larry Rodriguez, not only a solid starting pitcher but an infielder and hitter as well.

"Im not really sure where well put him in the rotation just yet, because I havent talked to him, but Im sure hell be an asset if he doesnt have any problems," Hancock said, noting he should join the team Friday.

(Hell) make a difference," Ebright said. "Definitely. Hes going to be one of their starters and he adds another hitter to their lineup. He can easily add two to four hits a night to their lineup."

Whether or not Rodriguez plays, the teams square off again Friday at 7 p.m. at Joe Bauman Field.

ROSWELL — After getting home from Santa Fe in the wee hours of the morning Tuesday, the Invaders were a little slow to get started against Raton Tuesday night. But once they did, there was no stopping the Roswell juggernaut as they won 16-1.

“We got back about two in the morning from Santa Fe, and we told them to stay off their feet today and we kind of showed and go today,” said Invader manager Chris Ebright. “And it kind of showed that we were tired the first three innings, but then we came around. We woke up a little bit.”

For Raton, the problem was slightly different than what they’ve seen in the past few games. While starting pitcher TIm Sylvester came out and threw well, the defense faltered.

“He did good,” Oso manager Ray Hancock said of Sylvester. “We let him down as we had a couple of errors that were very bad. Very bad. They were at a bad time. He gave me everything

SANTA FE — No. 1 Roswell — running away with the first half of the season at 22-6 — wrapped up a four-game series sweep of Santa Fe at Fort Marcy Park Tuesday, going up early on a struggling Fuego starter then battling back after their own starter faltered, getting a 15-8 victory.

Asked what the secret was to the early-season success, Invader manager Chris Ebright laughed.

“I really don’t think there’s any secret,” he said. “We’ve got some good hitters and our pitchers, for the most part, did a good job and I think this series we played some good, all-around baseball, for the most part.”

Roswell sent its first six batters to the plate against starter Josh White before even getting an out.

Chad Kruse singled, Ryan Normoyle and Andrew Deeds doubled, Vincent Mejia singled, Charles Dubanoski walked and Daniel Baptisa singled before White finally got an out. After Invader starter Andrew Shoemaker singled, Larry Rofdriguez moved to the mound to close out the inning.

SANTA FE — Nothing much changed in Fort Marcy Park Monday as Roswell downed Santa Fe 14-4 for the Invader’s third victory in a row over the Fuego.

The Roswell runs started early and didn’t let up, while Invader pitcher Ed Kohout had a strong 5.2 innings, giving up only two runs on five hits before surrendering the mound to Ryan Richardson, who gave up the final two runs, only one earned, before Jesus Carlos closed out the ninth.

One difference from the night before is that there were only two home run in the hitter friendly park, but that didn’t matter much as the other hits added up.

With two outs in the first Roger Bernal walked and scored on a Vincent Mejia single. Mejia scored on a Mike McCarthy double, and the Invaders were off and running.

They made it 5-0 in the second when Kohout walked and came in on a Reggie Taylor double

SANTA FE — Sunday’s game at Fort Marcy Park proved once again that standings don’t always determine the outcome of a baseball game. It also showed that a 285-foot right-field fence can make a big difference in a game.

The Invaders, who lead all teams with a 20-6 record, faced off against the Fuego, who are tied for second from the bottom of the league. But the game was a close 6-5 Roswell victory, with five of the Invader runs coming on home runs, all off starter Austin Carden.

Still, said Santa Fe manager Bill Moore, “He was very good. I’m not crying. I don’t want anybody to think I’m crying. They hit, I think of their six runs, I think five of them on a regular-sized baseball field would have been routine outs. So Austin threw well. He threw very well.”

Other than the short-porch shots — and three of the Fuego runs came on a home run — both coaches agreed it was a great game.

“I think both starting pitchers did great,” said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. “Coming up

SANTA FE â€" The story around the Pecos League seems to be about pitching. HItters are strong, the defense is much improved but solid relievers are hard to come by. And that certainly was the case Saturday in Santa Fe, as all but nine runs in the Invaders 19-8 victory came from the bullpen.

Jacob Cook pitched a strong game for Roswell, giving up only two runs on four hits and a walk.

“Starting pitcher did great,” said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. “He’s actually been bouncing back and forth between starting and relieving, and we’re actually short a starter until Monday, so he stepped in and did a heck of a job.”

The only Fuego runs he allowed came in the first and seventh innings, on home runs by Josh Barnett â€" a first pitch shot â€" and Kellen Lee.

Fuego starter Jon Sintes didn’t do badly, either, even though he gave up seven runs in six innings.

ROSWELL -- Fridays Pecos League game betwen Trinidad and Roswell at JOe Bauman Field ended in a flurry of controversy -- not because of anything that happened on the field, but because of what came out of the sky.

With the Triggers pounding the Invaders 11-3 in the bottom of the third, a storm that had threatened all night moved in, first with lightning that caused the umpires to call a temporary halt to proceedings, then with wind and pounding rain that lasted about 20 minutes.

But even when there was no rain, no one made any moves to cover the field -- or, at least, the pitchers mound and batters box -- and by the time the storm passed over, both those parts of the field were unplayable.

"We called (groundskeeper) Charlie (Ward, who was on vacation)) and we dont have a tarp," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "We dont have diamond dry. We dont have kitty litter. The infield is playable. Its great. Its the pitchers mound and home plate. We were told by our grounds crew that we did not have any (tarps.)"

Trinidad manager J.D. Droddy was fuming, claiming the game was called because of the score.

"Of course Im not happy. We were lied to," he said. "The sabotaged it, because they didnt play.We were beating the hell out of them. Lack of integrity and Im disappointed with Chris Ebright because he played dumb."

While Droddy wants the game to be resumed in Trinidad, Ebright said itll be picked up in Roswell.

"Im hoping its get made up in Trinidad, because thats what should happen," Droddy said. "They sabotaged the game. It should be resumed in Trinidad. Thatll be up to the commissioner. But equity says it shouldnt happen, because they sabotaged the game."

"It will be at our place," Ebright said. "They come back the end of June and I do believe the rules say we pick up where we left off. Like we did the last game, and just take it from there. The infields perfect, but its the pitchers mound and the batters box and where the catchers at its unplayable, and we had no affect on this decision. It was the umpires. We were told by the grounds crew and we looked in the shed and we do not have tarps."

Expect some possible fireworks when the Invaders travel to Trinidad June 16.

"If they think this teams better than us, theyre full of crap," Droddy said. "Theyve been playing at home. Weve been playing on the road. This team is no better than ours and Im not sure theyre as good, and well see when the season is over."

ROSWELL -- It was night and day at Joe Bauman Stadium Thursday, not only literally -- as Roswell and Trnidad played a makeup late-afternoon/early evening doubleheader -- but in the way the teams split the two games.

The Triggers won the Wednesday carry-over game 7-3 on solid pitching while the Invaders both had pitching in game two, and took advantage of a plethora of Trigger errors.

Trinidad 7, Roswell 3

For most of the opener -- which was supposed to be played Wednesday but was postponed after two innings because of a massive dust storm -- it looked like the only run the home team was going to get was a first-inning score from the original night.

Trinidad pitcher Dylan Porter gave up one run on nine hits and a walk through the eighth, while the Trigger defense kept all but one of those runners from scoring, and the offense tallied five runs through eight, then added two in the ninth for a 7-3 victory.

"I cant say enough about Dylan Porter," said Trinidad manager J.D. Droddy. "He had been in the rotation and he wasnt finding it and I put him in the pen. And the first time out of the pen he pitched well. So he actually started yesterday. He pitched the two good innings then he came back and finished the job. Thats nine innings in two days. Complete game. Pitched a little over 100 pitches between the two days. Just an awesome job. Awesome job. I cant say enough about him. And he even got a hit or two."

"He kept us off balance," agreed Invader manager Chris Ebright. "Him and the catcher were right on track with each other and those games youve just got to tip your hat and move on to the next one."

Roswell got on the board Wednesday night on first-inning singles by Chad Kruse and Ryan Normoyle, a sacrifice bunt by Roger Bernal and a sac fly by Vincent Mejia. But after that, the game was all Trinidad until the bottom of the ninth.

With Ed Kohout on the mound Thursday in place of Jacob Cook -- strictly because of pitch count -- the Triggers picked up where they left off Wednesday. With Jason Venya on first and Porter on second, Matt Hunt singled to load the bases, then Jacob Fabry put Trinidad on top with a 2-RBI double. One out later, the third run came in on a ground out and the Triggers never again trailed.

They added one run in the sixth when Sam DiMatteo singled and came home when Frank Florio tried to stretch a single into a double.

Matt Hunt singled off reliever Ryan Richardson to open the eighth, advanced on an error and scored on a DiMatteo single. Trinidad then added two final runs in the ninth when Andrew Azzopardi singled, Venya reached on an error and Hunt hit a 2 RBI single.

The Invaders got their first runs on the day in the ninth when Andrew Deeds and pinch hitter Mike McCarthy each singled; then, two outs later, a wild pitch and error brought two runs in.

Despite the late runs, Porter went the distance -- the first complete game for Trinidad this year -- with five strikeouts and only the first-inning run earned.

For the Invaders, the problem was not hits -- they had hits -- but timely hits, and nine runners left on base.

"I remember bases loaded, two outs, and Roger Bernal lined out to the third baseman," Ebright said. "We had first and second and big Danny Batista up, and he hit a hard ball, line-drive right to the second baseman and double play. Thats the game of baseball. A couple of feet either way and the score might have been totally different. But it was just one of those days. I think we were a little sleepy. We didnt come prepared for that first one, but we woke up for the second."

They certainly did, turning the tables on the Triggers.

Roswell 14, Trinidad 6

"We played really well (Game 1), contrast to this last game we got nine errors," Droddy said. "We cant expect to win with nine errors. Thats all I can say."

"We took advantage of their errors and this game; we got hits when we needed to," Ebright said. "Eric Lambe did a good job. Chad Hardison came in and did what he was supposed to do and we had a couple of errors that gave them a few runs but overall, Ill take it."

After the Triggers put up one run in the first -- off a fielders choice, walk and Mike Goldy single -- Roswell went up 4-1 in the bottom of the stanza, getting only three hits but scoring on three errors.

"We gave them six outs in the first inning and it just went downhill from there," Droddy said. "The loss is not (starter Benji Waitess) fault. Its none of the pitchers fault. (Scott) Elitzky pitched fine, too. Our fielding was terrible and it happens. Im not going to say anything to the guys about it. They know what happened. This game goes in the category of forget about it, and thats what were going to do."

In addition to the errors and a walk, the Invaders got singles from Normoyle, McCarthy and Reggie Taylor. The Triggers added one run in the third on a Hunt double and DiMatteo single, then Roswell broke it wide open in the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits, two errors and a walk.

The hits came from Mejia and McCarthy, who each doubled, and Deeds and Lambe, with singles.

Trinidad got back on the board in the sixth, scoring two when Jacob Fabry singled and DiMatteo homered, but the Invaders added another four in the bottom of the stanza off inning opening singles by Batista and Deeds, three more Trigger errors and a dropped third strike.

Proving once again theyre never out of it, Trinidad scored two runs in the seventh -- the final inning of the doubleheader -- with singles from Fabry and DiMatteo and a two-run error.

The teams wrap up the four-game series Friday, with both managers looking for a victory.

"Wed like to win each series at home," Ebright said. "Wed like to win anywhere, but win the series at home and split on the road is what we like to try and do. Were going to come out and well play good baseball. Weve got Andrew Shoemaker going, and these guys are good Their better than they played today. So well get our minds right tomorrow and come back and play some good baseball."

"We would definitely like to get a split," Droddy said. "We think were as good a ball team as they are, and weve been playing on the road nearly all season so far. We get to play at home in June and July and we think well do better. I personally think were evenly matched with them. I think us, Las Vegas and Roswell are probably the top three teams in the league. Maybe with Alpine. I think those are the top four teams in the league and I think any of those four teams can beat any of the other three any time. And were going to split tomorrow."

ALAMOGORDO -- After an error-filled, high scoring game at the Aquarium Wednesday, the Cowboys and Pupfish battled in a pitchers duel Thursday, with Alpine coming out on top in the ninth, 6-3.

Still, Alpine coach Ryan Stevens wasnt completely happy.

"Not happy with the (three) errors, but I was really proud of the way the pitchers threw today," he said. "They put up a gutsy performance, and it reminded me of last years pitching staff the way they put it together."

Cowboy starter Bob Cook, a rookie, threw a strong six innings.

"It was his first start and he came out and he pitched his heart out," Stevens said. "I thought it was a gutsy performance and I thought our bullpen looked really good."

The scoring started in the second when Cowboy Brycen Bell hit a shot out of the park. The Pupfish tied it up in the third when Brett Mendoza and J.J. Costantino singled, with Mendoza coming home on a sac fly by Christian Ramirez.

Another home run -- this by Logan Lotti, his first of two in the game -- made it 2-1 Alpine in the fifth, then once again White Sands tied it up when Jerry Gonzales singled, stole second and came home on a Mark Leacox single in the sixth.

Both starters -- Chris Anklam and Cook -- went out in the sixth -- and relievers D.J. Stinsman, Mike Castrignano and Jeremy Burright allowed one run for each team in the seventh, keeping it tied at 3-3.

Alpine scored when Eric Herman singled, stole second and came home on a Carranza double. The Pupfish got their run when Costantino singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an error by Burright.

Justin Mauldin and Sean Kistler kept the eighth scoreless, then Ernesto Zaragaza was tagged for the winning runs in the top of the ninth.

We hit the ball," Stevens said. "We didnt drive in enough runners, but in the top of the ninth, Logan Lotti took a 92-mile-per-hour fast ball and parked it.

"Whoever that 20-year-old that (White Sands manager) Ernie (Munoz) just brought in, he was throwing gas. The first one he blew by Lotti, then the second one he took it deep."

"It was just a pitch we shouldnt have thrown in that situation, was all," Munoz said. "Lotti did a great job hitting that pitch."

After that, Carranza, Casanova Donaldson and Bell each singled, with Bell bringing in two runs, then Scott Hartline came in in the bottom of the ninth and shut the Pupfish down.

But despite the loss, Munoz was much happier than the past few games.

"We played well," he said. "Our starter, Chris Anklem, went, I think, six innings strong. I guess we made a couple of bad decisions on pitches there in the last inning. Gave up a home run here and double there, and before you knew it it was 6-3."

Friday, the teams wrap up their third series at the Aquarium in the first month of Pecos League play, and both manager know its the little things that will make the difference.

"Weve got to clean up the errors. Weve got to drive runners in and I need more out of the relief pitchers," Stevens said.

"Well be fine," Munoz said. "We never really separated. We just got a little comfortable for a couple of days there. We know its going to be a grind and we know what were looking at here and we just want to get to the playoffs, however thats going to happen."

Wednesday night was not a good night for Pecos League teams, as weather played havoc with the schedule..

Heavy rainstorms in north central New Mexico washed out both the Taos/Las Vegas game and the Santa Fe/Raton matchup.

This Blizzard/Train Robber game will be made up Friday as a doubleheader, while the Raton game is expected to be made up during a future series between the two teams.

Things were even more interesting in Roswell, where the Triggers and Invaders got through two innings -- Roswell was leading 1-0 on first-inning singles by Chad Kruse and Ryan Normoyle, a sacrifice bunt by Roger Bernal and a sac fly by Vincent Mejia.

Neither team scored in the bottom of the second, then, just as the Invaders took the field, a huge wind/dust storm blew in from left field, obscuring any chance of seeing the ball.

The officials called a brief delay, then Jason Venya walked and pitcher Kellen Quintana hit a ball high into left that literally got lost in the blowing dust, dropping in for a single.

After that, another delay was announced and eventually both managers and the officials, with approval from commissioner Andrew Dunn, agreed to postpone the game until Thursday at 4 p.m., when the teams will pick up where it left off, then, following the conclusion of Game 1, play a seven-inning second game.

ROSWELL Its unusual when the losing manager is happier with his team than the winner, but that was the case Tuesday in Roswell.

The Invaders edged Trinidad 12-10, but gave up all 10 of the Trigger runs in the last four innings.

We played bad baseball in the second half, said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. Unacceptable baseball in the last three or four innings. Our hitters came out. Did great. (Starter) Jonathan Sa did great, I think the first 6-1/3, 6-2/3s. Our relievers have to throw strikes. Thats unacceptable baseball in the last three or four innings, and something weve got to work on, think about.

Triggers have another comeback vs. Taos

TRINIDAD, Colo. -- A lot of pitchers saw time on the mound in Trinidads final home game this stand vs. Taos, and when it was all over, the four pitchers the Triggers sent to the mound did a better job than the eight the Blizzard threw, giving them a 14-9 victory as they head to the final game of the series Monday in Taos.

"We still are making too many errors, but we are doing what we need to do to win the ball game," said Trinidad manager J.D. Droddy. "We never think were going to lose. We get behind and we just keep plugging away."

And thats pretty much what happened Sunday at Central Park.

The Triggers did jump on top first, going up 4-0 in the second when the scored on two walks and four singles, with pitcher Chris Tuttle getting 2 RBI and Matt Hunt and Frank Florio one each in the stanza.

Taos came back with three runs in the fourth, scoring on back-to-back singleds by Jordan Chiero and James Martinez followed by a 2 RBI double by Russ Burroughs; then a walk and two more singles, with Khyle Dimino bringing in Burroughs.

Matt Hunt walked, stole second and third in the bottom of the stanza to make it 5-3 Trinidad, but the Blizzard had a big fifth off reliever Mike Mullen, going up 7-5.

Again, it was mostly singles that led to the scoring, with Chiero and Martinez getting one baggers, then, with two outs, Wes Moody singling in Chiero and Kyle Richardson plating two on a double. An error brought in the last runner.

But that Trinidad never-say-die attitude showed in the sixth as the Triggers put up another four spot, the big blow a 2 RBI double by Reichie Serritella after singles by Hunt, Florio and Wink Nolan.

The Blizzard loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but stranded those runners after Mullen bore down, then Trinidad put yet another four runs up, on three hits and an error.

Taos got one run in the eighth on a solo home run by Calvin Culver, but the Triggers matched that scoring with a Bryce Miler dinger (following a double in the seventh.)

Taos kept hitting to the end, getting a final run in the ninth on a two-out single by Dimino and an error, but Culver flew out off reliever Scott Elitzky for the days final out.

Noting that Tuttle -- who had no decision -- "did not have his best start," Droddy said he wasnt unhappy with the pitching. "Our pitchers did fine. Tuttle actually did fine. He was just struggling and he reached a pitch limit and I took him out."

Once again, the Taos problem was the pitching, said manager Matt Leahy.

"We played all right. We just pitched ourselves into trouble. Pitched ourselves out of some trouble. At the end of the day, weve just got to pound the right pitches in the right situation."

Combined, the eight Blizzard pitchers allowed 14 runs, all but two earned, with seven walks.

Both managers agreed their batters did their jobs -- "We always hit great. Statistically, we have one of the most potent offenses in all of baseball," Leahy said -- and Droddy was pleased with the other aspects as well.

"We hit. We ran the bases really well. We just keep hustling. Hustle, hustle, hustle," he said. "Steal the bases, putting pressure on the other team and we just find a way to win. I think we were probably out-hit and they had fewer errors but we won the ball game by a comfortable margin."

The teams now head to Taos for a game at noon Monday, and Leahy is looking forward to getting home.

"Were what? Four and 1 in games we had the last hit?" he said "So if we can bat last, and weve got a lot of those games coming up here, its just a matter of if we can get to .500 by the middle of June, I think were set up good for the stretch."

ALPINE, Texas -- Roswell earned a split in always-tough Kokernot Park Sunday after edging the Cowboys 6-5 in another nail-biter that wrapped up the four-game series.

"We played good baseball," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "We knew we had to come in here, (against) Alpine at home and theyve been hungry. Theyve been on the road and we played good baseball."

"It was a good series," agreed Alpine manager Ryan Stevens. "The only game I was really completely unhappy with was (Saturdays opener)) and even then, I thought my bullpen came in and threw well. Couple of things early on in (Sundays) game we made mistakes on. Bryce (Weidman) has just thrown really well for us all year long, and he made a couple of mistakes and left the ball up and they capitalized on it."

Roswell got on the board early when Chad Kruse hit a one-ball double to open the game then came home on a two-outr double by Vincent Mejia.

Roswell pitcher Nate Johnson -- a familiar face from 2012 when he led the team on the mound -- started out a little shaky, but two first-inning walks were nullified by a double play.

After Weidman settled down in the second -- getting Roswell 1-2-3 -- Johnson gave up back-to-back singles by Joel Carranza and D.J. Johnson and a perfect sacrifice bunt by Brycen Bell that left runners on second and third with no outs.

Catcher Billy Crowe then hit a ball into the infield that was picked up and thrown to home. The umpire ruled Carranza out at the plate, drawing the ire of the fans, the Alpine dugout and Stevens, who strenuously argued that his runner was safe.

But all the arguing was to no avail, and Johnson got out of the inning unscathed.

After Weidman got out of a bases-loaded situation in the third, the Cowboys made up for the non-scoring second by going up 3-1.

Derrick Fox opened the offense with a double. Tyler Rost singled Fox in and a 3 RBI shot over the fence by Logan Lotti gave the home team the lead.

Both teams were scoreless in the fourth -- Johnson gave the crowd a good laugh when he hit a solid shot to center that should have been a double but fell down midway between first and second and just got back safely -- but the Invaders re-took the lead in the fifth.

Kruse singled, advanced on a ground out and scored on a Roger Bernal single. With two out, Mike McCarthy hit a two-run home run that made it 4-3. Roswell made it 6-3 in the sixth off reliever Matt Marra when Reggie Taylor singled, advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a Ryan Normoyle double and the lone error of the game. Normoyle then came in on a put out.

But the cowboys didnt go down easily.

They had runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth and left them stranded, but teed off on relieverRyan Richardson, who, with one out, walked Rost and gave up a single to Casanova Donaldson.

Ebright then brought in another new/old Invader face, Dakota Laufenberg, who promptly hit Lotti, gave up an RBI sac fly to Carranza then hit Johnson before getting the final out.

Lotti then closed the gap to 6-5 in the ninth with a one-out solo home run and after reliever Ryan Rogers got the second out, Johnson was hit, putting the tying run on first and go-ahead run at the plate. But Bell hit a long fly ball to center, and Game 4 went to Roswell.

"Were going to fight to the very end," Stevens said. "Kokernot is a very difficult place to come and win two games from us, and hes got a good team over there and we didnt capitalize when we needed to and I dont think we did a good enough job offensively here. Theres no excuse. Weve got to walk away with a win."

Ebright was not only happy with the win, but with what he saw from both former-now current Invader pitchers.

"(Johnson) came in there and our offense came around and we got the lead and he settled down," the manager said. "He did great. I think he went six innings for us. We took him out because of his pitch count, but it was also the fourth time through their lineup. We have nothing but hopefully great things to look forward to with him here."

As to Laufenberg, "He was a little bit wild, but then again, hes fine. Hes one of those guys wholl usually throw every other day, and I think he sat for three days. So we brought him in when we did. Hes going to be just fine."

Because of the Saturday doubleheader, both teams get a day off Monday, something Stevens is very much looking forward to.

"Tomorrow will be our first day off in a month," he said. "Literally, and were going to take advantage of it and relax a little bit and spend some time refocusing and getting ready and well practice on Tuesday then well go from there."

The Cowboys head back yet again to Alamogordo -- their third meeting this season with the Pupfish -- while the Invaders host Trinidad Tuesday.

Roswell Invader Erick Gaylord sent to the Slammers

Roswell Invader outfielder Erick Gaylord is the first Pecos League player to move up to a higher league in the 2013 season.

Gaylord has been sent to the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League. He was the first of several Roswell players set to be promoted to the higher leagues, and was a key leader in Roswell"s 15-5 start to the Pecos League Season.

"Its always exciting," said Invader manager Chris Ebright of the move. "Its extra exciting for Erick. He thanked us, the Roswell coaching staff and people for giving him the chance to prove his stuff and it was great for him. We wish him the best. But just for the Roswell team, just to get our name out there and show that we can get guys moved up. Its all around a good thing."

Of course, Gaylord"s upward mobility means he won"t be there to spur on the Invaders, but Ebright said that"s part of being in independent baseball.

"I told him on the phone when I was talking to these guys, "Its great for you, good and bad for us. Its good because were playing the right players, bad because weve got to find another one."

Pitchers dominate in DH split between Alpine, Roswell

ALPINE, Texas -- Pitchers dominated in both games in Alpine Saturday, with Roswell taking a 6-1 victory in the opener and Alpine coming back to win 5-2 in the nightcap.

Roswell 6, Alpine 1

Take away the starting pitcher in Game 1, and Alpine and Roswell had a pitchers duel. Invader Andrew Shoemaker pitched seven complete -- the first complete game for Roswell this season -- allowing only four hits and one run; the run on a blast over the left field fence by Joel Carranza.

"Shoemaker did great," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "He threw all his pitches for strikes and I tell you what, theres a lot of lefties in the league who are really mowing teams down by throwing all their pitches for strikes. Hes one of them and he did a great job."

Alpine manager Ryan Stevens agreed.

"I have nothing but good things to say about the starting pitcher for them the first game," he said. "He kept us off balance. His change-up was working. He just diced us up. He threw a really good game.

"And I tell you what. Ive only seen about three or four pitchers do that in Kokernot Field at my five years here. Come in and just shove the way he did. So that was impressive."

But Cowboy starter Derrick Mitchell wasnt, giving up six Invader runs, all earned, on eight hits and one walk in two innings to give the visitors a 6-1 victory.

After a scoreless first inning, Roswell scored all their runs in the second with two outs -- something theyve become very good at doing. Andrew Deeds led got a two-out single; Shoemakers walked and Reggie Taylor doubled in two. Taylor then scored on a Chad Kruse single before Ryan Normoyle grounded out.

Carranza made it 3-1 with his blast in the bottom of the second, but the Invaders added three in the third, and after that, the scoring shut down.

Roger Bernal walked to open the third, then Vincent Mejia followed that with a matching left-field home run to make it 5-1. One out later, Nate Theunissen singled and, after a pitching change, a fly ball by Shoemaker scored the final Roswell run.

After that, the game belonged to the pitchers, as Shoemaker completed his effort, and Josh Cruse, Kris Barone, Jeremy Burright and Sean Rockey wrapped up for the Cowboys, allowing only two more Invader hits.

"Our bullpen, even in the first game, was pretty lights out," Stevens said. "They did what they were supposed to do and I was pretty proud of them. Our starter got in some trouble. Left the ball up a couple of times and got hurt."

Shoemakers sounded happy, not only with his pitching but even with his hitting.

"I feel really good today," he said. "Obviously, throwing every pitch for a strike kept them off balance, so thats really what it was. Theyre a really good hitting team. About the RBI, I really just kind of lucked out. I got a fast ball and kind of got it in the air."

He was cheered on throughout the game by family, who came from around Texas and across the country to see him pitch.

Ebright hopes they show up every time the lefty pitches, while Shoemaker was just happy to see them.

"A lot of them I havent seen in a few years. Theyre just from the kind of area, so its definitely good to see them."

The pitcher was asked wjhat the team, that was beaten badly Friday, did to turn things around Saturday.

"Really, we are professional ball players, so we understand there are a lot of games were going to lose," he said. "So its not really how you lose, its how you come back from the loss. So its a new day. New pitches. New hitting. So we just come out and kind of flush it."

Alpine 5, Roswell 2

Game 2 also saw strong pitching, with Cowboy Brian Smith, who shut out Roswell the first time the two teams met, giving up two runs but still winning 5-2 with a complete-game effort.

"He did a complete game, but I think they beat us 8-0 when they were at our place," Ebright said. "We saw him the second time and we did a lot better. So maybe the next time well get him."
Alpine had a big third inning in the nightcap -- the third seems a problem for the Invaders -- scoring four runs on four hits and an error off JOrdan Lehman.

After Brycen Bell was hit, catcher Conor Thompson sent a shot out of Kokernot Park, making it 2-0. Derrick Fox and Tyler Rost followed with singles, which was it for Lehman. An error to the first batter Eric Lehman faced brought in Fox, then, one out later, Logan Lotti singled to make it 4-0.

The Invaders got their first runs of the year off Smith in the fifth when Kruse tripled and scored on an out, then Bernal homered to cut the lead to 4-2. The Cowboys got their final run in the sixth off Jesus Carlos when Smith reached on a fielders choice, advanced on a walk and scored on another Roswell error.

Roswell threatened in the top of the seventh, putting runnersat first and second with only one out, but the Cowboys closed the game with a double play.

"(Smith) threw a good game," Stevens said. "I was proud of him and we were able to get that double play at the end before they really started to get after us and he made a good pitch. In fact, that was his last batter. But regardless, its good baseball between the two teams and I think its going to be a fight to the finish between the two of us."

"Especially doubleheaders, you want to get them both at home and split on the road. So well take it," Ebright said. "Obviously, we wanted to win both. We showed at the end that we can make adjustments on what a pitchers throwing and we did OK."

With one more game at Kokernot Sunday -- a 1:05 p.m. start -- Steves still expects more from his team.

"As a whole, Im not unhappy about today, but its still unacceptable, especially in Kokernot Field," he said. "Were still not playing the best baseball. Were still not hitting it great. When I say were not playing our best baseball, were not putting it together. Because theres been times when were just hitting the crap out of the ball and then not pitching well."

ALPINE, Texas -- After a rough road trip which the Cowboys ended with a 2-6 record over the last two series, Alpine was eager to get home to the friendly confines of Kokernot Stadium. Friday, they opened a brief home stand with a 5-0 shutout of Roswell, handing the Invaders only their second shutout of the season and their first two-game loss.

"We were ready," said Cowboy manager Ryan Stevens. "We had a lot of built-up aggression. We were pretty banged up and after about 14 games on the road, we were ready to come home and play at our spot. So were real glad about it."

Starter Brad Orosey pitched an awesome game, three-hitting Roswell with only three walks while striking out 10 Invaders.

"Thats what championship caliber teams have," Stevens said. "They have one of their aces come out on the mound in a real big game. He did that for us in the championship series last year. Hes just a workhorse and hes developed,. He had a couple of rough outing early on and hes worked his butt off and he will not stop until he gets better."

Orosey didnt go the full nine innings -- turning the final stanza over to reliever Matt Marra -- who set Roswell down 1-2-3 -- but Stevens said that was Oroseys choice.

"His pitch count was up and when Brad Orosey tells me hes had it, I listen," the manager said.

The Roswell starter didnt have a bad day, either.

"Ed Kohout did great," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "He went six innings. He did OK. They hit the ball when they needed to and well come back offensively."

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Cowboys went up 1-0 on back-to-back-to back singles by Orosey, Derrick Fox and Eric Herman. Oroseys hit was contested by Roswell first baseman Nate Theunissen, who said he wasnt pulled off the bag, then, after that incident died down, there was another "only in the Pecos League" moment.

The umpires appeared to be discussing the call, but actually, the plate umpire had apparently become dehydrated in the 90-degree plus temperatures and needed to be cooled down. After water and some ice, he went back into the game to the cheers of the fans. (Which was ironic, since the Alpine fans had been needling the umpires mercilessly earlier.)

The Fox and Herman singles followed, with Orosey scoring the games first run on a ground out by Casanova Donaldson.

The Cowboys added two more runs in the fifth when Fox walked and Herman hit an RBI double, then, two outs later, a walk and error brought Herman in. Alpine got its final runs in the seventh when Donaldson singled and scored on a Logan Lotti double, then Joel Carranza had an RBI double.

Roswells only hits were singles by Ryan Normoyle and Vincent Mejia and a double by Matt Faiman.

"We kept them off balance," Stevens said. "We did a good job with that. Were on the same page. Were still banged up. Bryson (Sims) banged up. So is (Mike) Dobre. Lottis banged up in left field, but were manufacturing runs and were doing what we need to do."

Ebright was still able to smile after the loss.

"They got us on our bad days," he said. "We didnt play very well today, mentally or physically. We didnt have a good strategy. We knew what their pitcher has and we didnt make adjustments through the game. Thats all right. Well be all right."

The teams will face off in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 4:05 p.m. at Kokernot Park, and Stevens said his team is ready.

"We are absolutely ready. Were going to come ready to compete every single day."

Cowboy Derrick Mitchell will face Andrew Shoemaker in the opener, while Brian Smith and Jordan Lehman will square off in the nightcap.

Both games will go seven innings, and Ebright said thats a good thing.

"If anything, its for the better," he said. "Because weve used a lot of bullpen this week, so two sevens, hopefully we dont have to use very many and we have Monday off. So hopefully today and Monday will help our stats a little bit."

ROSWELL -- The standing dont always tell the story, and they certainly didnt Thursday, as the last place Osos wrapped up their four-game series again No. 1 Roswell with a 7-5 victory.

It was a game that featured some good -- and some not-so-good -- pitching, solid hitting, strong defense and a bit of controversy.

"The guys never gave up," said a very happy Raton manager Ray Hancock. "I knew eventually we were going to start putting this team together. Its taken a little while, but we are starting to come together now as a team. Were playing our positions like we should. We kept the errors down to, I dont know, very minimal. One error. One error. Its a big deal when you only have one error in a nine inning game. I dont care what level. MLB or whatever. Thats a good deal. We hit when we needed to. We got them out when we needed to. The guys in the blue shirts make it really difficult for anybody to come here and play, Ill tel

ROSWELL -- Of their 14 wins this season -- to only two losses -- the Invaders probably played their best all-around game Wednesday in an 8-2 victory over Raton.

"I think tonight just showed how we can play the game of baseball," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "We have a run on second base, no outs, we hit behind him. Runner on this, less than two outs, we got him in. We didnt have to out-slug anybody and we played the game of baseball."

That game started with pitcher Jonathan Sa, who five-hit the Osos through 6.2 innings, striking out six and walking only four. He did give up the only Raton runs -- in the seventh, Matt Lynch walked, Brian Gregory and Louie Saenz singled, and Gregory scored on a put out -- but there could have been more, as twice he and the defense got out of bases-loaded situations.

"He had the bases loaded twice and I think he got the double play both times," Ebright said. "He got ground balls like he should. He concentrates extra hard with the bases loaded -- I wish hes concentrate that hard with nobody on -- but all around, it was a great baseball game."

That first sticky situation came in the sixth, when Sa gave up a single to Vince Smarnellli then walked the next two batters, but a 4-6-3 (Vincent Mejia to Ryan Normoyle to Nate Theunissen) ended that threat, then, in the seventh, the second run scored on a 5-4-3 (Chad Kruse to Normoyle to Theunissen) DP, which luckily for the Invaders cleared the bases, because Steadman Smith came up and doubled.

Jesus Carlos then came in to strike out the final batter of the inning, and two of the three he faced in the eighth, with A.J. Martin closing out the ninth.

Offensively, Roswell scored off three Oso pitchers.

They started with a run in the first off Brian Hicks when Kruse doubled and Normoyle singled him home. The big Invader inning was the fourth.

With one out, Theunissen and Andrew Deeds walked, then, with a second out on the board, Matthew Faiman walked and Kruse hit a 2 RBI single. Normoyle followed that with another 2 RBI single to put the Invaders up 5-0.

Roswell got two more runs in the fourth off Tim Sylvester, again scoring with two outs.

After Kruse singled, Reggie Taylor walked and Vincent Mejia singled in Kruse. Taylor then came in on a wild pitch. The final Invader run came in the sixth when Normoyle advanced all the way to third on an error by the left fielder then came home on an error by the catcher.

A vey disappointed Raton manager Ray Hancock understandably did not want to talk after the game, but Ebright was happy to praise his players, especially Sa, who shut down the hot-hitting Osos.

"I dont know what pitches he was throwing, but he kept them off balance tonight. I know hes throwing at least three pitches for strikes, and he definitely kept the middle of their order, whos been punishing us the last two nights, I guess, he kept them off balance and he did really well."

As to the offense, "I actually gave a couple of guys a rest tonight, and the other guys came through. Thats always a good thing to have," the manager said.

Theunissen was 3-for-3 with a run scored, Kruse 3-for-5 with three runs and 2 RBI and Normoyle continued his hot hitting in front of his father, going 3-for-4 with one run and 2 RBI.

"Hes been doing well," Ebright said. "His dads here. His dad should come here more often."

The teams will wrap up the four-game Roswell home stand Thursday, then the Invaders head south to Alpine while Raton goes to White Sands.

ROSWELL — After a four-hour marathon Monday, the Invaders and Osos played a much tighter game Tuesday, with Roswell coming out on top again but by a much smaller margin, 8-5.

“Their starting pitcher threw very well. So did ours,” said Invader manager Chris Ebright.

Roswell pitcher Jacob Cook only found out he’d be pitching about 10 minutes before the game when scheduled starter David Mueller hurt his shoulder during warm up.

“Jacob Cook came in and did great,” Ebright said. “He pitched, I think it was three ior four innings two days ago. Came in, threw four today. Eric Lambe did great. Eric Lambe, we stretched him out longer than he normally does, and Ryan Rogers, he comes in and does his thing as a closer. Overall, it was a good baseball game. It wasn’t one of those that was 400 to 300 or whatever.”

ROSWELL -- After several pitchers duels in the Pecos League Monday, it was the hitters who dominated in Roswell. The Invaders and Osos both went through their pitching staffs, with Roswell coming out on top 20-13 in a four-hour game.

"Lots of hits," laughed Roswell coach Chris Ebright. "What was there? A total of 33 runs scored. I dont know how many hits. Ratons a good hitting team as theyve shown tonight and I mean, were on a roll. Were just going to keep going with it, I guess."

Ebright wasnt even around for most of the game as in the top of the second, he went out to discuss a call at second -- and was promptly tossed. Kevin Dore spent the remainder of the game as acting manager.

For the first five innings the game was close, with first the Osos then the Invaders taking a lead, then each squad going back and forth.

Raton went on top 2-0 in the first on no hits but two big Invader errors. But Roswell came back in the bottom of the stanza when Ryan Normoyle reached on a fielders choice then advanced on singled by Roger Bernal and Vincent Mejia.

The pace of the game slowed in the second as Raton went up 6-2 on two two-out singles, a walk, and a 3 RBI home run by Michael Lange. But three runs wasnt enough for Roswell, as Normoyle came to the plate in the bottom of the stanza with the bases juiced, and hit a shot over the right-field fence.

"(It) felt good," the left fielder said of his first-ever grand slam. "We were down four runs at the time so I was happy we got to tie it up."

So what was he thinking as the ball headed his way?

"I think it was a full count (it was) and he threw a fast ball and I just took a swing at it and it went out."

Starter Dustin Javins got the second out then walked Mejia, and that was it for him. Jared Rolan then gave up a single to Charles Dubanoski and an RBI double to NAte Theuinssen, making it 7-6 as the dust cleared.

That was the most drama of the night, but, except for the third, when no one hit or scored -- a Roswell error drove starter Scott Elitzky from the mound -- the hits kept coming.

Both teams added a pair in the fourth, making it 9-8 then Roswell stretched the lead to two in the fifth when Erick Gaylord singled, stole second and came home on a Bernal single. That was the tipping point, said Raton manager Ray Hancock.

"We just didnt finish the job we started," he said. "We were with them until about the fifth inning, and I let my starter in there too long. Got a grand slam. Totally my mistake. We still tried to stay with them. I think it was like the seventh inning. Brought another pitcher in. Got a couple of base hits. They had another home run, which pretty much broke our back at the time. We just couldnt come back to get them. We played ball, but they just out hit us, bottom line."

That other home run came in the sixth when Theunissen walked, pinch hitter Matthew Faiman singled and Gaylord -- who was 5-for-6 on the night with four runs and 3 RBI -- hit the shot out of the park.

The Invaders added two more in the seventh -- on two hits and an error -- and five in the eighth, all with two outs. Doubles by Andrew Deeds and Gaylord and a triple by Chad Kruse were the big blows.

But the Osos didnt go quietly. They got two in the top of the eighth -- Westly Jones singled then came home on Langes second shot out of the park -- and three more in the ninth, scoring on three hits -- including a double by Adam Ziegler -- an error and a wild pitch.

Those errors were something that concerned Ebright, along with the less-than-stellar pitching.

"Pitching was very iffy for both sides," he said. "We definitely have to work on giving the free bases. But we also have to work on our errors as well. I dont know how many runs in this game were unearned, but thats just something that we have to (fix.) Were bringing our guys in for early work. Were working with our infielders, and working with our outfielders on routes to the ball and I think we can get a lot better."

Hancock liked the comeback try, but again blames himself for the loss.

"We try to keep going, but as far as Im concerned, this loss was my mistake. I left my pitchers in just too long. Im an optimist and I felt like they could take care of business and I was wrong. As far as Im concerned, this was my game to lose and I lost it."

With 33 combined runs (24 earned) and 33 hits, many hitters improved their averages.

Besides Gaylord, Kruse was 4-for-4 with two runs and RBI; Mejia with two runs and RBI; Bernal 3-for-7 with two runs ands 1 RBI; and Deeds 2-for-5 with two runs and 3 RBI. For Raton, Lange was 4-for-4 with four runs and 5 RBI; Jones 3-for-6 with four runs and an RBI; and Barban 2-for-5 with one run and RBI.

The victory stretches Roswells lead over everyone else in the Pecos League, and Normoyle sounds more than pleased with what his team is accomplishing.

"I think 12-2, especially in pro ball, is amazing," he said. "Weve just got to keep playing hard, like we do every day. Pitch, throw strikes, make the routine plays, get on base. Thats our motto."

With some new faces and a strong squad of hitters, the Osos will try to move up in the standing when the teams face off again Tuesday at Joe Bauman Park.

ROSWELL -- Alpine manager Ryan Stevens finally had something to smile about in Roswell Sunday, as the Cowboys out-pitched and out-hit the Invaders, getting a 6-0 victory in the finale of the four-game series.

The story of the game was pitcher Brian Smith, who held Roswell to three hits through eight innings, striking out 12 while only walking two.

"Brian Smith was unbelievable on the mound," Stevens said. "Hes has a couple of rough outings but hes been working his butt off and he wanted this bad. And he knew that we needed this and Im very proud of him."

"Their starting pitcher did very, very well," agreed Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "We couldnt figure him out."

While Smith -- and reliever Scott Hartling, who wrapped up in the ninth -- were shutting Roswell down, the Cowboys pitchers were putting runs on the board.

They went up 1-0 in the first when former Invader Casanova

ROSWELL -- The Invaders went back to their old tricks Saturday at Joe Bauman Stadium, making everyone sit on the edge of their seats until they pulled out a 9-8 victory over Alpine.

But the fact that the game was that close meant that the Cowboys -- who struggled in the first two games against Roswell -- looked a lot better.

"They played great," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "That team right there, the way they played tonight is why theyre going to win a lot more games than they lose. It just so happens, we got the last at bat."

"Hes right," agreed Alpine manager Ryan Stevens. "Hes got a good ball team over there and I have a lot of respect for Roswell over there. Theyre a well-rounded team. Thats the type of baseball youre going to see from the two of us. Those last two nights were just out there. But youre going to see a lot of good baseball."

The Invaders drew first blood in the second when another Andrew Deeds home run made it 2-0. But has been the case lately, Roswell struggled in the third.

"The third inning again," Ebright laughed. "The third inning seems to get us lately. But you know what? The third inning, we still have what? Seven more at bats because were the home team and you cant count our guys out. You cant do it."

That third saw Alpine put up five runs off starter Ed Kohout. Derrick Fx opened with a double, then, with one out, Logan Lotti singled, Joel Carranza reached on an error and D.J. Johnson sent the ball sailing over the fence for a grand slam home run.

Brycen Bell and Billy Crowe each followed that with singles, with Bell scoring on an out.

Roswell added a pair in the bottom of the stanza when Erick Gaylord singled, advanced on an error and came home on a single by Chad Kruse. Cruse later came home on a Roger Bernal single and put out.

The Cowboys got one run back in the fourth on back-to-back singles by Herman and Lotti and an error, then added another in the fifth when Crowe, Brad Orosey and Fox all singled.

Roswell pulled within one in the bottom of the stanza when Kruse walked, Ryan Normoyle was hit. Mejia hit an RBI single, Mike McCarthy walked and Nate Theunissen sent a sac fly to right.

With starters Orosey and Kohout done for the night, the relievers made thesixth go quickly, and Invader Ryan Richardson did the same in the seventh. But after Mejia singled and McCarthy walked off Josh Cruse, Gilbert Barrera intentionally walked Deeds then Matt Marra got the second out of the inning. But Gaylord unintentionally walked, forcing in Mejia, to tie the game at 7-7.

Thats the way it stayed in the eighth as both teams put a run on the board, then Eric Lambe shut the Cowboys down in the ninth. Deeds, who was 2-for-4 on the day and is batting .523, singled, Gaylord broke his bat but got another single then, with two out, Ryan Normoyle hit a walk-off single to win the game.

"We battled back, what four? Five innings?" Ebright asked. "We just kept doing it tonight. There were a couple of situations where I thought we should have brought more than one run in. Runner on second, less than two outs, even no outs. But you know what? Again, thats why we play nine innings."

Stevens had the same thoughts.

"Ive got a lot of young guys and there were certain situations they could have handled differently, but thats a part of learning," he said. "Theyve just got to figure it out now."

There was one other factor that made the Invader win even sweeter. The Roswell players spent the morning officiating at the Hike It and Spike It flag football tournament, a Memorial Weekend staple in the Alien City. That meant they were up early, calling games until mid afternoon then back at the ballpark for the game.

"They were out in the sun. You should see the funny tan lines these guys got from their hats backwards and their sleeves rolled up but again, I think theyre young enough not to know they should be tired," Ebright said. "Well do it again tomorrow. Well celebrate this win tonight but then weve got to get refocused as soon as we wake up."

ROSWELL -- The Invaders continue to mow down their opposition, moving to 10-1 on the season Friday with a 10-5 victory over Alpine.

Roswell continued to look good in all facets of the game, but even though the Invaders put up their 10 runs on nine hits, manager Chris Ebright said his team still needs to hit better.

"We got 10 runs but their pitching helped that," he said. "I dont know how many walks to strikeouts they had -- obviously Ill take that -- but were going to come across some pitchers who arent going to do that. So were going to have to get better in that sense."

The Cowboys did have a tough time on the mound and defensively, and thats something manager Ryan Stevens is not happy with.

"The fact is, with us, Ive never seen us make this many errors and its not acceptable and the boys know that," he said. "But the biggest problem is our pitching. Were walking way too many people. I think it was 15 guys who we walked and hit by pitch."

Four Cowboy pitchers actually walked 12, hit one batter and threw four wild pitches, with starter Mike Castrignano unable to strike out any batters on seven walks. Reliever Derrick Mitchell -- who only allowed two Invader runs in 3.1 innings -- struck out five and only walked two.

Roswells pitchers, on the other hand, were solid, with one exception.

"All except the third inning, Chad Hardison did great," Ebright said. "Jacob Cook looked the best hes been this year and Ryan Rogers does his thing the last two innings. Another game, three pitchers. It helps us out in the bullpen the rest of this weekend."

The Invaders put up two runs in the first when Chad Kruse and Ryan Normoyle walked and came home on a Roger Bernal single. Roswell made it 4-0 in the second when a walk, error and two outs put runners on second and third, and Chad Hardison came in on a wild pitch with an error then scoring Kruse.

But Alpine made it a game at least for one inning when Billy Crowe walked to open the third then, two outs later, Casanova Donaldson was hit, Logan Lotti walked to load the bases and Joel Carranza hit a four-run blast out of the park to tie the game.

That huge hit, as well as some near misses, made Stevens less unhappy with his offense.

"Offensively, I will say, and this is no excuse and Im not making excuses, but the fact is we scorched about seven or eight balls right at people. Derrick Fox scorched about two or three right to the fence and the wind didnt seem to be carrying them. Casanova hammers a ball to right center. Without the wind like that, that balls flying out of here."

And Roswell did make some solid defensive plays -- committing only one error -- including throwing Fox out at home after he reached on that lone error in the first.

"I sent D Fox home on that play," Stevens said. "It took a perfect throw on both ends to get him out at home and they did. Theyre a mentally sound team. Theyre a quality team, thats for sure."

The tie didnt last long, as the Invaders made it 5-4 in the bottom of the third on an error, and 7-4 in the fourth when Bernal singled, VIncent Mejia walked and Andrew Deeds doubled them home.

The Invaders added a solo run in the seventh when pinch hitter Matthew Faiman doubled and came home on an Erick Gaylord single and wild pitch, then added their final two in the eighth on two bases-loaded walks. After Carlos Camacho reloaded the bases, Kris Barone came in to pitch and got the final out on a magnificabt catch by shortstop Brycen Bell.

And Alpine got its final run off Rogers when Kenshoku Takubo hit a solo home run, but that was it for the Cowboys.

Stevens said he hasnt lost faith in his young team, and knows they can play better then theyre showing.

"Were not even close to playing our best baseball," he said. "In fact, I don;t think were playing really well at all. Weve got to find a way to come through and weve got to find a way of hitting our spots. Pitchers have to come in ready to go, no matter the strike zone of the umpire. It doesnt matter. Theres no excuse for that. Well be back out here tomorrow. Thats a promise."

And so will the Invaders, including a familiar face. Reggie Taylor, an outfielder who hit .360 with 11 home runs for Roswell last year, will rejoining the team.

"Im excited to get a veteran guy back, and especially a guy with his pop," Ebright said. "Even more of a batter in our lineup. I really dont think were where were going to be yet. I thing were still getting better. We just have to keep working every day."

ROSWELL --Neither thunder, lightning, rain nor an almost 45 minute rain delay could keep the Invaders from getting back on the winning track Thursday, as Roswell crushed Alpine 13-4 back at home in Joe Bauman Stadium.

It was a fitting way to start what the Invaders probably hope is another long win string, as they scored big in several innings, never trailing against the Cowboys.

"We had two errors today, which is better than weve done in the last two games, and we hit the ball in the situations we needed to," said manager Chris Ebright. "We had a great pitching performance from Jonathan Sa, and Matt Faiman came in for one. Eric Lambe came in for one and we hit."

The started hitting in the first, going up 2-0 on singles by Ryan Normoyle, Roger Bernal, Charles Dubanoski and the first of six Alpine errors. Those errors were just one of the things that had Cowboy coach Ryan Stevens understandably unhappy after the game.

"Our pitcher threw poorly. We looked like we were still asleep in the van from traveling here today, which is absolutely no excuse," he said. "Weve rolled off vans and weve stomped two teams. There should be no excuse for that. Were leaving too many runners on base. Striking out too much. Eight errors or six errors, whatever the case may be, is completely wrong. Thats terrible on our part. Were far too good a team for that. And a solid baseball team like Roswell is going to capitalize on it."

And thats what they continued to do.

After the Cowboys came back with one run in the second -- Sa walked Logan Lotti and Tyler Rost, a single to former Invader Bryce Bell and a scoring sacrifice by Shane Youngdale -- Roswell added three in the third to never trail again.

Alpine starter Youngdale got the first two outs of the stanza, but then allowed Vincent Mejia to single; walked Dubanoski and Nate Theunissen hit a shot that was picked up by the strong winds to left ands sent the ball out of the park.

Youngdale helped his own cause in the fourth, singling in Lotti, who earlier singled and advanced on two outs, but Roswell had another three-run inning in the fifth. This time, Bernal reached on an error and Mejias homered, then, after Theunissen reached on catcher obstruction, Deeds singled and another Alpine error brought Theunissen home.

The Cowboys had their only multiple-run inning in the sixth when Lotti walked, Tyler Rost singled and, with two outs, Sa threw a wild pitch and in trying to recover, an Invader error brought two runners home.

But Roswell came back big in the bottom of the stanza. Chad Kruse doubled off Gilbert Barrera, then, after an out, Bernal singled him home. Mejia struck out for the second out, but Dubanoski walked and Theunissen again reached on catcher obstruction, loading the bases.

That set up the situation for Andrew Deeds, who nailed the third Invader home run of the day, a grand slam.

"Hes a guy who, in that situation, hes going to try for it," Ebright said. "Hes just a great kid. Hes seeing the ball well lately, so it just happened to come."

It wasnt Deeds first grand slam -- he had two in college -- but that didnt make it any less special.

"Theyre special every time," he said. "Im just trying to put a good swing on the ball and one just happened to go out."

And is it true he was trying for the dinger?

"Im trying to send something in the outfield," Deeds said. "Not particularly a home run. I want to get the run in, maybe two."

That put the score at 13-4, which is where it stayed until the final out, which was looked to be a routine pop fly to the third-base side of the infield. But Lambe, catcher Dubanoski and third baseman Kruse all converged on the ball, which dropped untouched between them. Luckily, Lambe got Lotti to strike out, and the game really was over.

"Pitchers, they just need to get out of the way," Ebright said of the laugh-inducing hit. "Throw the ball and just lay down. Our pitcher was thinking he could catch it, and thats bad for first base and third base when the pitcher thinks he can catch it. And it didnt make me happy but our kids played a good game."

Which is something Alpine didnt do.

"Weve got to clean it up," Stevens said. "Weve got too much sloppiness. Even up to this points, 10 games into the season were 7-3 and Im still not happy with where were at at all. I think were a 9-1 team right now, because tonight we deserved to get our butts kicked. We came out, we looked like a deer caught in the headlights. And thats unacceptable. Well be back. Well be all right."

Ebright agreed, saying it wont be any easier Friday.

"Theyre a good team. Theyre better than what they showed tonight and itll be a tough three games coming up."

And then there were none. Pupfish hand Invaders first loss

ALAMOGORDO -- The Pupfish did something Wednesday no other team has been able to do this season: they beat Roswell 8-7 to had the Invaders their first loss of the season.

It did take 10 innings -- which made the loss a little easier to take -- but that also made the win sweeter.

"It feels great," said White Sands manager Ernie Munoz. "The way we did it on the comeback win, its the best feeling in the world."

"Thats the way it goes," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "We just happened to get beat in the bottom of the last inning."

The win was topped off with a walk-off triple by Mark Leacox, but there was lots of excitement earlier.

The game was close and low-scoring early, with strong performances by both starting pitchers.

Eric Zagone went seven for the Fish, giving up only four runs,

Matthew Faiman scored in the first when he reached on a fielders choice and scored on a single by Roger Bernal and Vincent Mejia double.

The Invaders got two more in the second on a Nate Theunissen single followed by an Andrew Deeds shot over the left-field fence. Roswell got one more run in the fourth when Deeds beat out a bunt single, advanced on a ground out and scored on a single by Chad Kruse, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

Alamogordo got one run off Invader starter David Mueller when J.J. Costantino was hit, advanced on a put out and scored on a George Ban single. Mueller kept the next four innings scoreless, but left in the fifth because of an injury.

"I really wish we could have used him another inning or two, but his arm was just hanging," Ebright said. "The way he battled with his arm sore. Hes a tough kid."

The Pupfish closed the gap to 4-3 in the sixth off A.J. Alexander, scoring on a Mike Mendoza single that dropped between the fielders in short center field and a Cody Collins home run. White Sands took a 5-4 lead in the seventh off Jacob Cook, who gave up an Andrew Parrish single; a long RBI single by Costantino; a Mendoza RBI single and a fielders choice and error.

And while the start of the game was error free, things started looking a little sloppy late.

Roswell tied the game in the eighth off Pupfish reliever John Saavedra.

Bernal singled, Mejia was hit then one out later, Theunissen advanced on catcher obstruction to load the bases. Deeds singled to deep left, but left fielder Mendoza singled a catch and Theunissen turned around, headed back to second and was caught off base.

That sparked a discussion between the managers and umpires but once thing settled down, Saavedra got the final out.

Jesus Carlos came in and set the Pupfish down 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth, and Nick Alexander did the same to Roswell in the ninth. But in the 10th, it appeared as though the Invaders would pull out another come from behind victory.

With one out, Mejia walked off Justin Kuks then McCarthy reached first on a fielders choice that saw Mejia safe at third. Theunissen reached on a second error, scoring Mejia, then a Deeds fielders choice and error scored McCarthy. Carlos then walked, but Erick Gaylord struck out, putting the lead at 7-5 and setting up the Pupfish heroics.

With Carlos still on the mound, Jerry Gonzales singled. Mendoza walked, Gonzales advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a George Ban single. WIth the small but very enthusiastic crowd cheering their favorites on, Collins got the first out of the inning then Leacox came to bat and on a 2-2 count, nailed a shit into center that brought home the winning runs.

"Its unbelievable. Very exciting," Leacox said of the win. Asked what he was thinking at the plate, "Just stay short, quick to the ball and hit it hard. Simple," he said.

How did he feel knowing how Carlos had pitched in the previous two innings?

"I had a lot of confidence. I was just looking for a good pitch in the zone to get a good swing on. Keep it simple. Challenge him."

And thats what he got.

"Absolutely. I was very happy with that. Very happy. Theyre a very good team. Im glad to get a win."

"We played strong," Munoz said. "Our errors were in the ninth inning. We played no-error baseball until the ninth inning then we let a few get away, but the best part about it is we didnt stop fighting and we came back and scored three in the bottom of the 10th."

Ebright didnt seem too concerned with the loss.

"We knew they could hit. We used up a lot of bullpen and I wasnt going to use up any more. Jesus did a great job," he said.

Roswell heads back to Joe Bauman Stadium Thursday for a matchup against Alpine, and Ebright said there wont be any changes.

"Were not going to do anything different. Weve got our starter, Jonathan Sa going tomorrow. Were going to just keep playing baseball."

White Sands will face Trinidad, but Munoz said he doesnt care who comes to town.

"We just want to play our own ball right now," he said. "Weve been playing against the other teams and beating ourselves. We just have to play our game the way we play."

Munoz back, but Pupfish still cant stop Invaders

ALAMOGORDO -- Going on the road couldnt stop the juggernaut that is the Roswell Invaders, as they topped White Sands 15-6 in the Aquarium Tuesday to up their win streak to eight games. But while the Pupfish lost, they had one thing to celebrate as manager Ernie Munoz finally joined the team, promising changes that he hopes will help the squad right itself.

"Ive been talking to the guys while I was gone, now Ive seen it first hand, so I know the changes that need to be made," he said. "I was going off what other guys were telling me, but its always better to see it with your own two eyes and now that Ive seen it, I think I know the changes I need to make and Ill make them."

Tuesday, the problem was too many errors, some shaky pitching and not enough timely hits. Roswell only used three pitchers -- starter Ryan Richardson and reliers Scott Elitzky and Eric Lambe -- and made their hits count.

"Richardson, Elitzky and Lambe. Three pitchers in one game. Thats great," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "They threw strikes. White Sands, they hit the ball pretty hard and right at a couple of our guys, so we got lucky in a sense in a couple of innings because another two inches higher and it would have been an RBI double. But still, thats the game of baseball. But our pitchers did very well tonight and our hitters got on base and we put pressure on some people."

The Invaders sent eight batters to the plate in the first, starting off when CHad Cruse reached on a two-base error. Pupfish starter Chris Peacock then got the next two batters batters, but Ryan Normoyles sac bunt scored Cruse, and the final out was hard to come by.

Vincent Mejia doubled into the net in left field, Charles DUbanski and Nate Theunissen walked and Andred Deeds hit a three-run double.

White Sands scored one in the bottom of the first when Monoz -- catching as well as managing -- singled and scored on singles by Mike Mendoza and Cody Collins.

Roswell made it 5-1 in the third on a solo home run by Mejia, then added two more in the fourth on two errors, with Cruse scoring on a passed ball Mejia bringing in Roger Bernal on a single

The Pupfish had their biggest inning in the bottom of the third.

Richardson walked George Ban, allowed a Chris DeBiasi single and Jerry Gonzales RBI double and a 2 RBI J.J. Constantino seeing-eye single, a shot that bounced off Richardsons glove and then right under the glove of the second baseman.

Neither team scored in the fifth but Roswell added another five runs in the sixth on five hits, a hit batter and an error and another three in the eighth on a ground-rule RBI double by Erick Gaylord and a ground out.

Reliever Andrew Parrish helped end the inning wneh a Normoyle shots bounced off his glove and he was still able to recover in time to throw it to first for the out.

The White Sands fans had a little bit to cheer about in the bottom of the eighth when Collins singled, Ryan Pembroke walked and Collins came in on an error. Two wild pitches later and Pembroke came in with the final Pupfish run.

Munoz, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored as a player, said as the manager, he knows what needs to be done to get the team back on track.

"I saw a lot of people who are injured on our team, who havent been telling me that," he said. "I didnt know the injuries that had occurred and I had guys out there playing hurt, so Ive got to take care of that and get some fresh legs in there. Our pitchers, they just need to pound the zone. They need to throw more strikes and they all know that. Were going to talk about that right now and hopefully going forward were going to fix that."

Ebright said while the fans may be talking about the Invader win streak, the players arent.

"Its just the way it goes. In a season like this, with so many games, you can win six, seven eight in a row then the next week lose five, six, seven in a row. Obviously were playing well. Confidence is great with these guys and well just keep taking it one day at a time."

Invaders win pitching duel vs. Pupfish

ROSWELL -- For six innings Monday, Roswell and White Sands battled in a pitchers duel, with Pupfish Matt Gibbs and Invader Andrew Shoemaker keeping the other team off balance and off base. Even though Roswell won 7-4, Invader manager Chris Ebright had praise for both teams.

"That was a great ball game," he said. "Heck, we finished in 2-1/w hours. Gibbs, hes a great pitcher for them and for us, Shoemaker went seven scoreless. He did great."

There were only two runs through six innings, both by Roswell.

In the bottom of the first, Chad Kruse singled and advanced to second on a 1-3 ground out by Ryan Normoyle. During that defensive play, Gibbs caught a knee in the back of his calf, but staying in despite the pain.

"After that, he was pitching through that injury right there," said acting White Sands manager Andrew Parrish. "He was struggling with that. I know that was hurting him as well, but he got through it and did a great job. He kept them scoreless for four innings, five innings right there. He battled through it, we just didnt swing the bats early. Thats what weve got to do to win ball games."

Despite the injury, Gibbs got a second out but then Vincent Mejia singled, putting the Invaders up 1-0.

Mike McCarthy opened the bottom of the second with a triple but once again, Gibbs got two outs before Erick Gaylord singled to score McCarthy.

After that, Gibbs shut Roswell down through the sixth, while the Pupfish were unable to cross the plate vs. Shoemaker.

The Invaders got out of the fourth with a double play, then, with two outs in the fifth, Steven Rogers singled and Gibbs reached on an error that put runners at second and third, but George Ban flew out to center for the third out.

Both teams put one batter on in the sixth but couldnt score, then White Sands put runners on fist and second in the seventh, but Mark Leacox, who had doubled, was out at third on an unusual third to first double play, and the Invaders came back in the bottom of the stanza to score two runs.

Andrew Deeds opened the inning with a double and scored on a Matthew Faiman single and two-base error. Faiman then scored on a Kruse single.

The last two innings belonged to the relievers, and while Faiman got out of the eighth unscathed despite a single by Ban and throwing error, Fish John Saavedra wasnt quite as lucky.

The first two batters he faced, Charles Dubanoski and McCarthy, singled, advanced on a wild pitch and, with two outs, scored on a double by Gaylord who stole second and came home on an error.

White Sands finally got on board in the ninth off relieve Jesus Carlos, who, Ebright said, was pitching on little rest.

"We just used him the other day and I just wanted to see what he could do with not a lot of rest and hell be just fine," the manager said.

Leacox walked and stole second, Ryan Pembroke singled then, with two outs, Ban walked to load the bases and Christian Ramirez hit a 2 RBI single. Mike Mendoza followed that with a 2 RBI single, but Carlos helped his own cause when Cody Collins hit back to the pitcher, who threw to first for the final out.

Ebright said the late comeback reminded him of the Invaders.

"Thats kind of the way we had been in the first six games," he said. "We were kind of lulled through the first five, six, seven innings. Thats the game of baseball. Its not like basketball you can just run the clock out or football you can take a knee. You have to play all night."

And, Parrish said, playing all night is what his team needs to do.

"As far as we go, we didnt swing early," he said. "As you can see, we didnt swing the rest of the night. So their pitcher did well. He kept us off balance a little bit, I guess you could say. He pitched well and we didnt hit it so he did his job. We have a great hitting team, and as you can see, right there at the end, we can put it together. Weve just got to start putting it together a little earlier."

The teams will continue the series at the Aquarium in Alamogordo Tuesday and Wednesday, and both coaches are thinking positive.

"Were going to do it," Parrish said. "Weve got two more games at home against them, and were going to get it done. Well be at home and everything will be good to go."

"Weve seen them in spring training. Weve seen them the last two nights and Im sure its going to be a couple of good baseball games," Ebright said. "The one thing Im happy about it that weve already hit at their field. Weve seen the backdrop. But again, theyre a good baseball team and it should be a couple of good games."

Invader streak stretches to six with victory over Pupfish

ROSWELL -- After five innings of not looking good at all, the Roswell Invaders bounced back yet again Sunday, going from a 5-0 deficit vs. White Sands to a 7-6 victory. And the key to the win was a pitcher, pinch hitter Jonathan Sa, who tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth before Erick Gaylord gave Roswell the one run edge. Jacob Cook then came in and got the Pupfish one-two-three in the ninth to give the Invaders their sixth straight win.

"Our guys keep battling," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "Kids kept battling. Tip your hat to his starting pitcher. We couldnt figure him out."

White Sands came into the game looking strong, as the bats made contact and starter Justin Kuks shut the Invaders down.

The Fish went up 3-0 in the second when Case Rigby singled; Cody Collins reached on an error then, after Rigby was called out trying to get home, George Ban doubled and Ryan Pembroke doubled Collins and Ban in. Pembroke then scored on a wild pitch before Ed Kohout got the final out.

White Sands left the bases juiced in the third, but added a pair in the fourth when Pembroke walked, Kuks reached on an error and back-to-back singles by J.J. Constantino and Christian Ramirez brought the runners in.

Roswell finally broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two when Chad Kruse doubled, Matthew Faiman walked then, with two outs, a wild pitch and a VIncent Mejia single brought the runners in.

The Invaders made it 5-3 in the sixth off reliever Matt Barger when Gaylord walked, stole second, went to third on a walk and hit batter then came home on a fielders choice.

Roswell left the bases loaded -- something both teams did several times Sunday -- when Chad Hadzinsky got the final out.

The Pupfish got the run back in the seventh on a walk to Rigby, who advanced on a wild pitch and came home on an error.

But once again, Rowell wouldnt go quietly, getting out of another bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth when they turned an error by first baseman Nate Theunissen into a double play that closed out the inning, then scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Sas heroics were set up when Faiman reached on a Pupfish error. With one out, Mejia and McCarthy each walked to load the bases, and this time, the runners came home,

Theunissen hit into a fielders choice that saw Faiman out at the plate, but reliever Michael Willis walked Andrew Deeds to force in Mejia and Sa came in to pinch hit, singling home two with a ball that bounced off the pitchers glove then took a bad hop past the infielder. Gaylord then singled in Deeds for what would be the winning run.

"Coach (Kevin) Dore and I had a feeling (about Sa), and thats what you do," Ebright said. "Had a feeling he could do it and we put him in there."
"They ended up getting runners on there then they got the hit when they needed it. Thats it. Thats baseball," said White Sands acting manager Andrew Parrish. "We just didnt get the timely hit when we needed it."

What made the win even sweeter for Roswell was that the team did do terrible early on.

"We didnt look good," Ebright said. "Offense, defense. We did not look good at all. It was just like we were kind of out of our rhythm. Maybe it was the early game, early time. I dont know what the reason was. We didnt have the enthusiasm we had until the second half, and a hit here and a hit there and good things happen."

The Pupfish out-hit the Invaders 11-8, and both teams made three errors. But 12 walks by four White Sands pitcher were enough to make the difference. Kuks, who was not involved in the decision, struck out 10 and gave up his first run of the season.

A.J. Martin got the win for Roswell with Cook getting the save.

The teams will meet again Monday in Roswell, and Parrish continued to think positive.

"Im not worried about what theyve got going," he said. "I know what weve got here and we can beat that team. We beat ourselves right there. As simple as that. They got the timely hit and we walked a few guys and that hurt us right there and once they got the hit they got the lead. But we can play with these guys any day. Im not worried about that. Weve got a squad."

Ebright said the six-game opening streak doesntworry him.

"No. I dont think you get nervous at all," he said. "Weve still got 64 more games. Its (a loss) going to happen. No team ever goes 70. Its not going to happen. Weve still got 64 more games. Ill take these as we go."

First pitch Monday is set for 6 p.m.

ROSWELL -- The final game of the five-game series between Roswell and Las Vegas ended pretty the same way the other four did -- with the Invaders getting a last-inning victory -- but Game 5 was different in that that 8-7 loss belonged more to the pitcher than the hitters.

And, both managers agreed, it was the best game for both teams.

"I think both teams played a lot better," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "Today was more of a baseball game. There wasnt that many errors. There wasnt as many hits as been going on. The pitchers did well. For the most part, we made the routine plays and it was more of a strategic game than just an all-out, everyone hitting."

"I think this was the best baseball game we played so far, and things just havent gone our way this first series," said Train Robber manager Casey Dill. "We made one error. Our defense played very well overall. The one error ended up costing us two runs, which ended up being the difference in the ball game. But we have nowhere to go but up from here. It was good to see we played a solid baseball game all around. Roswell is a team thats going to make you beat them. The one costly error cost us big but we kept fighting to the end, and were going to win a lot more baseball games than we lose."

Its an interesting line score that tells much of the story.

Each team scored two runs in three different innings. Roswell scored another two runs in a fourth, while Vegas only scored one. That one run was the difference between losing and a tie. But initiall, it looked like the Robbers might finally have things going their way.

After Will Walsh reached on an error, Matt Gross homered to put them up 2-0. Robber starter Derrick Martinez then struck out the Invaders in the bottom of the inning before Las Vegas made it 4-0 after 1-1/2.

A.J. Alexander doubled and scored on a Gary Stauff single. With two outs, Walsh walked and Gross got his third RBI of the game on a single.

Martinez started the second the way he ended the first, with two strikeouts, but catcher STauff dropped the third strike and Charles Dubanoski made it safely to first. Mike McCarthy and Andrew Deeds both singled, scoring Dubanoski, and McCarthy scored on a sacrifice by Jonathan Sa.

Roswell tied it in the fourth when Dubanoski and McCarthy hit back-to-back doubles, and McCarthy came home on a fly ball and wild pitch.

The fifth inning was the difference, as the Robbers again went up, but could onbly bring one run across. Walsh doubled and Gross singled him in.

Martinez walked Vincent Mejia in the bottom of the fifth and, after another of his nine strike outs, gave up a home run to McCarthy, making it 6-5.

The Invaders stretched their lead in the sixth off reliever Michael Kershner and that one big Vegas error.

Chad Kruse was hit and Matthew Faiman reached on a bobble by the third baseman. Kruse then scored on a fielders choice that put Roger Bernal at first, and after he was wild pitched to second, he came home on Dubanoskis second double of the day.

But, as been the case through the entire series, the game wasnt over until the fat lady had sung. Jesus Carlos came in for Roswell in relief in the seventh, giving up singles to Walsh and Randy Wells, then, with two outs, walking Adam Kan and allowing a 2 RBI single to pinch hitter Joey Naskell.

The game then came down to the relievers, and they did their jobs.

Ben Runyon got Roswell out in the seventh and eighth, and while Ryan Rogers put runners on base in both the eighth and ninth, the Train Robbers couldnt plate those runners, with the game ending on a double play from Chad Kruse to Dubanoski.

"That was a great turn by Chad Kruse," Ebright said. "Great job by Ryan Rogers to close them out the last two innings. Theyre a heck of a hitting baseball team, so everybodys going to be on the edge of their seats when it comes down to the eighth and ninth innings, but youve got to tip your hats to those guys for battling and tip your hats to our guys for closing out the baseball game."

The middle of the Invader lineup did most of the damage Saturday, with McCarthy 3-for-3 with three runs and RBI; Deeds 2-for-3 with 1 RBI; and Dubanoski 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Sa got the win with Rogers getting the save.

Walsh and Gross led the Robbers. Walsh was 2-for-4 with three runs; Gross 3-for-5 with one run and 4 RBI; and Staff was 2-for-4 with one run and RBI.

"I saw a lot of positive things today, and going down to the last three outs in the ninth inning, we gave them a run," Dill said. "We played good baseball. If we play baseball like this consistently throughout the season, were going to be fine. The goal is to make the playoffs and give ourselves a chance and if we can play like this I think well be right there at the end."

Las Vegas heads north Sunday, looking to gets their first win in Trinidad. The Invaders stay home, as White Sands (1-3) come to Joe Bauman Stadium. So what will it take to continue the winning streak?

"Just keep playing baseball," Ebright said. "Baseball is a game you just keep playing your thing. Theres going to be some strategy with some of their hitters, but weve seen their guys in spring training, and they can hit a little bit, too."

First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Gaylord homers help Roswell to big victory

ROSWELL -- Friday, Invader fans had a chance to breathe easy for most of the game vs. Las Vegas, as, in contrast with the first three games between the two teams, Roswell went up early and continued to stretch the lead, winning 16-4.

The big difference was the second inning, which saw the Invaders send a bakers dozen to the plate, highlighted by the first of two home runs by Erick Gaylord.

"I knew Erick Gaylord could do that," said Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "I knew he could do that, thats why we brought him here, and hes got speed and power, which are two great things for a baseball player, obviously."

The Invaders left the bases loaded in the first without scoring, but they had no problem with that in the second. Andrew Deeds led off with a triple, then, one out later, Gaylord and Chad Kruse singled; Ryan Normoyle and Roger Bernal each reached on errors; Vincent Mejia walked; Mike McCarthy singled; Nate Theunissen doubled; and, now back where they started, Deeds doubled and that was it for Train Robber starter Anthony Nalepa.

But Chuck Fontana, just called up to Las Vegas, didnt do much better, giving up the Gaylord home run.

Will Walsh got the first Robber home run with a solo homer in the third, then singles by Randy Wells, Chris Wilson and Adam Kam in the fourth made it 10-2, but Roswell closed out the inning with a crowd-pleasing double play.

Roswell added another four runs in the bottom of the stanza, two coming off Gaylords second home run of the night, and two on a pair of walks and a single.

It wasnt the first time the right fielder had smacked two shots in a game -- the first time, he said, was in a summer league in 2011 -- and he wasnt even sure either was going out.

"They just kind of barely cleared the fence, so I ran hard, hit it hard and they happened to go out today," he said.

The fifth and sixth were scoreless, then, with Eric Lambe in in relief of starter David Mueller, Las Vegas got two runs on an error, walk and Chris Wilson double. But that was all Las Vegas could score, and the Invaders added an insurance pair in the eighth on a Lambe single and Normoyle home run.

"A little surprising," Ebright said of the left-fielders blast. "We knew he had a little pop, but we didnt know he had left-center pop being a left-handed hitter."

For Las Vegas manager Casey Dill, the loss was more of the same. "Were consistently the same team every night," he said. "I cant expect us to put up 12 runs every game. It would be nice to think that we would. I think most games we are going to put up a lot of runs and tonight we didnt, but any game, no matter how many runs you score, if you have a 10-run inning and you give up 10 hits in three innings and youre walking guys, youre not going to win many baseball games. It was the same game, kinda different circumstances, different innings that it happened in, but its no different than Game 2 or Game 3, but we just have one inning where we completely implode."

While every Invader who went to the plate except Mueller had at least one hit -- with Deeds 4-for-5 with three runs and 2 RBI -- the "Mueller /Lambe combination held Las Vegas to just seven hits.

"They did great, and that what we look for from our pitchers," Ebright said.

Gaylord said hes not surprised at the early-season Roswell success.

"Actually, weve got a pretty good group of guys," he said. "I think were pretty talented. Were starting to gel together, and honestly we havent even hit our stride yet. Weve got a good bunch of guys who come out and work hards every day and its paying off, so Im expecting great things out of our team."

Dill is trying to keep a good outlook despite the 0-4 start..

"Im staying positive, as this point, I look at this more or less as our spring training," he said. "Because I didnt have a baseball field to accurately assess these guys. We did our best with what we were provided. We had a bullpen and we had a batting cage, and I cant accurately assess how hitters hit live pitching and our pitchers face live hitting if we dont have those opportunities."

Dill said hell keep looking for a combination that works, and in the mean time, the two teams will wrap up the series Saturday a 7 p.m. in Roswell.

Another night, another Roswell come back

ROSWELL -- Another day, another come-from-behind victory by Roswell puts the Invaders on top of the league -- either division -- with a perfect 3-0 record after Thursdays 12-11 victory over winless Las Vegas.

"I tell you what," laughed Roswell coach Chris Ebright. "These kids, they dont know what theyre doing to us. Even the fans out there. Were making it exciting, which, some times, I wish we would just get ahead and not make it exciting. But, you know, again, our guys fought back, and we scored eight in the bottom of the eighth and these guys just dont quit."

The first five innings made it look as though it might be a low-scoring pitching duel between starters Ryan Richardson and Atsushi Nebisawa.

Richardson allowed one Train Robber run in the first on singles by Matt Grosso, , Randy Wells and Adam Kam, and one in the fourth when Wilson singled and advanced on a throw, sacrifice and put out.

Roswell tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Nate Theunissen, Andrew Deeds and Ryan Richardson all singled -- Richardson scoring Theunissen -- and Chad Cruse had an RBI sacrifice fly.

The fifth was scoreless on both sides, but the Robbers seemed to break it open in the sixth, scoring six runs off six hits -- starting with a home run by Randy Wells -- and two errors.

The Invaders added one in the bottom of the sixth and the score remained 8-3 after seven. But after Roswell reliever Ryan Rogers held Las Vegas scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Invaders had that big eight-run eighth, scoring off relievers Kevin Camacho, Joel Sanchez. MIchael Kershner and Ben Runyon.

An Erick Gaylord triple, Cruse single and Ryan Normoyle opened the inning, with two walks, an error, a hit batter, two wild pitches and two singles all combined to bring the Roswell runners home.

The only bad news was when Jordan Owen was hit, and hit hard. As he tried to bunt, Kershner threw high and tight, and the ball smacked the hitter in the face. He was taken to the hospital where it was discovered his jaw was broken in two places, and hes currently in Albuquerque, awaiting surgery, and is reported in good spirits.

That bit of bad news aside, the Invaders led 11-8 with only three outs to get.

But just as happened Wednesday, Roswell pitcher Jacob Cook couldnt hold Vegas, with the Train Robbers scoring three runs with two outs on a hit batter, error and single off Cook, then singles by Lauer and Michael Pena off Scott Elitzy.

The game was now tied 11-all.

And again, just as the day before, Las Vegas couldnt hang on, as Eddie Medina walked Roger Bernal and Vincent Meji, got Bernal out on a fielders choice but then gave up a single to the days hero, Theunissen, who singled to score the winning run.

"I hope we just keep it going," Ebright said of the hitting. "I think its just another one of those games where, in a way, we were lucky we were the last at bat. Were at home. But these kids make it exciting."

Las Vegas coach Casey Dill was understandably upset after giving away the third game in a row.

"Our bullpen has failed us miserably," he said. "Our bullpen has cost us two baseball games two nights in a row. Out bullpen isnt doing its job. Its that simple. Our bullpen has cost us two baseball games. Giving up a three-run lead and a five-run lead is not acceptable. I can control what I can control, and I can control who stays and who goes, and right now Im not going to sit back and watch us blow games every night. So theres guys who are fighting for their job every day, and there will be changes after this series."

Both starters pitched well -- Nebisawa more so, allowing only three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out six -- but both coaches had concern about their relievers.

"Just like them (Vegas), our relievers have got to do something different," Ebright said.

"Our hitting is going to give us a chance to win the baseball game every night," Dill said. "And as long as we can keep the errors to a minimum and we can throw strikes with a lead and get guys out with a lead late in the ballgame, were going to win a lot of baseball games. Right now, the last two baseball games have just been complete, absolute melt downs. And thats all it is. Guys are nervous. Theyre not ready to be here and like I said, were going to make some roster moves after this series. Its that simple."

Roswell also gave the fans several highlights in the field, throwing out Robber runners in both the first and second, then Gaylord making a throw from right field to start a double play.

"Weve just got to get more consistent defensively," Ebright said. "The first half of the game, we actually, I think, played very bad baseball. We didnt get runners in from scoring position with less than two outs. Some bad base running and I think we made some mistakes on key defensive plays. But overall, again, it was ugly but Ill take it. But weve got to get better.

Invaders get ugly comeback win over Train Robbers

ROSWELL -- Whether its the water or the aliens or just something at Joe Bauman Field, the Invaders have been heart-attack kids for as long as theyve been playing -- managing to pull out games at the last minute and giving the fans their moneys worth.

And they did it again Wednesday, topping Las Vegas 11-10 in a back-and-forth game that was won on a walk-off single by Roger Bernal -- who hit a grand slam Tuesday to secure that win.

"I think I just added two years onto my age here," laughed Roswell manager Chris Ebright. "But you know, the guys kept fighting. It seemed like every move we made, tip your hat to those guys (the Train Robbers). They hit. Theyre good. That team over there, Las Vegas, theyre good. But our guys kept battling. They had good at bats at the end, making the pitcher work and getting hit by a few pitches and finally Roger Bernal came through."

Las Vegas had the upper hand early, leading 1-0 on two singles and an error then going up 3-1 in the third on singles by Matt Grosso and Randy Wells, and a 2 RBI double by Chris Wilson.

But the Invaders used the long ball to go up 4-3 in the fourth -- Nate Theunissen brought in Vincent Mejia on a smash to right center, then singles by Andrew Deeds and Andrew Shoemaker and a passed ball gave Roswell the lead -- and 7-4 in the fifth.

After Grosso, Wells and Wilson hit back-to-back-to back triples to score one run in the top of the fifth, Bernal singled, Mejia walked and Charles Dubanoski hit it over the fence for a three-run home run.

But four Roswell relievers -- Shoemaker went four complete, then Eric Lambe, Will Scott, Scott Elitzky and A.J. Martin wrapped up the game -- couldnt hold the Las Vegas batters.

The Train Robbers scored two runs apiece in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, taking the lead in the eighth when Will Walsh was hit, stole second and came in on a Gross single. Gross scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball, fielders choice and Ryan Laur single, then Vegas added two more runs in the ninth to go up 10-7.

The inning didnt start well, as former Invader Adam Kam struck out and was ejected for arguing the call, but Eddie Medina and Ricky Brown each singled and came in on a Wilson double. All Brandon Petrangelo, who came in to pitch in the bottom of the ninth, had to do was get three outs.

But Dubanoski doubled, Nate Theunissen walked, Deeds was hit to load the bases and pinch hitter Mike McCarthy was hit, scoring Dubanoski. Erick Gaylord made it 10-9 with a sacrifice fly, then, after Ryan Normoyle walked, Bernal hit the game winning single that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Martin got the win and Petrangelo the loss, with Las Vegas starter Greg Fowler giving up seven runs before relievers Ben Runyon, Michael Kershner and Medina shut the Invaders down for 2-2/3 innings.

While Ebright was once again happy with his teams offense, he wasnt as pleased with the pitching.

"Pitching was iffy," he said. "Were gonna have to do something about getting some outs a little bit easier. I guess well see."

But going 2-0 to open the season? That feels good.

"We all feel good," he said. "Baseballs a funny game. These guys again (Las Vegas), theyre feeling out some positions. Their pitchers too, and when it comes down to it, theyre going to be up there with the best teams."

The two teams meet again Thursday in the middle game of the five-game series with first pitch at 7 p.m.

ROSWELL -- As much as people like to think they can predict the outcome of games, baseball is an unpredictable sport, and that showed Monday as Roswell topped Las Vegas 8-2 in the season opener for both squads at Joe Bauman Park.

Train Robber starter Edison Alvarez -- widely touted as one of the top pitchers in the Pecos League -- pitched well, but was betrayed by a number of Las Vegas errors. Invader Ed Kohout, meanwhile, only allowed two runs --one earned --in six complete innings, while relievers Matthew Faiman and Jacob Cook shut strong-hitting Las Vegas down through the final three innings.

Then there was the little thing called a grand slam, which Vincent Mejia sent out of the park in the sixth to give Roswell a big lead.

"Good things happen when you throw the ball over the plate," said Invader manager Chris Ebright. "Tip your hat to those guys. Theyre hitters, and there sometimes they just missed the ball but our pitchers did well and our hitters came through today."

"The scoreboard says four errors, but I know we had at least five, and probably at five or six of their hits, so more than half of their hits, were infield hits," said Train Robber manager Casey Dill. "We kicked the ball around in the infield. Its the same thing we did in the exhibition game. And were not making excuses. We havent been able to be on a field as much as we would like to be because of our field situation. Weve been practicing in a cage and off of a bullpen mound, and again, not making excuses. These guys are good enough ball players that five errors and five infield singles shouldnt be acceptable. So, we beat ourselves."

After a 1-2-3 top of the first -- Matt Gross singled but was caught stealing -- Roswell made it 1-0 in the bottom of the stanza when Jeff Eubanks tripled and scored on a putout.

It was another 1-2-3 inning for Kohout in the second, while the Invaders wasted a one-out, bases loaded situation.

Roswell added a run in the fifth when Roger Bernal singled and Mejia doubled him home. Las Vegas tied it at 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Edison singled, Will Walsh was hit and, after advancing on a putout, both scored on a single by Randy Wells. But that was all the scoring for the Robbers, and Mejis blew it open in the bottom of the sixth.

Faiman reached on an error, Erick Gaylord singled and both advanced on a ground out. That was it for Alvarez, and after walking Ryan Normoyle to load the bases, reliever Keith Vasquez left for Eddie Medina, who gave up an RBI single to Bernal. That brought Mejisa to the plate, and, to the cheers for the opening-day crowd, he sent a shot to left center that cleared the bases and put Roswell up 7-2.

The Invaders added one final run in the seventh on a Nate Theunissen single, error by the Cowboy third baseman; a second error by the third baseman and a balk.

"Mejias the guy we think whos obviously going to be our power hitter, and he came through and hopefully he can keep doing it," Ebright said, indirectly praising the rest of his hitters with kind words for Alvarez.

"That kid is good. Their starting pitcher, I think hes got three or four pitches he can throw for a strike at any count. Thats baseball sometimes you win, sometimes you dont, and we won today but hes good. Hes going to be a really good run."

Dill praised the Roswell pitchers equally.

"Theyve got some very good arms and again, not to make excuses because were not making excuses, we havent seen a whole lot of live pitching," he said. "Weve only the two exhibition games, so our starters today only had one game of live pitching. Again, thats not an excuse. These guys are good pitchers but theyre no different than the guys theyve been facing their whole lives. We werent aggressive enough tat the plate. We were trying to hit the ball out of the yard but we popped a lot of balls up and Roswell played solid defense. They played a great baseball game. They made us beat them today and we didnt do that."

Three Invaders had solid days at the plate. Mejisa was 2-for-2 with one run scored and 5 RBI. Theunissen was 3-for-4 with one run and Bernal 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and runs. Only Alvarez -- who was 2-for-2 with one run scored -- had more than one hit for the Robbers.

The teams will meet again Wednesday, with Andrew Shoemaker starting for Roswell and Greg Fowler for Las Vegas. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

EL PASO -- It was only spring training, so learning was an important part of the game Friday and the Invaders certainly learned a lot about what they need to work on after a 17-9 loss to the Diablos at Cohen Stadium in El Paso.

"Im excited about our hitting," said Roswell coach Chris Ebright. "Were going to have to do something about our pitching, though. A lot of these guys are AA players, so I think our players learned a lot tonight as well. On how to pitch certain people and what they can and cannot do. I think overall it was a good learning (experience) tonight. Well just go back at it tomorrow."

The hitting was certainly solid.

The Invaders had 13 hits, starting out with back-to-back-to-back singles by Jeff Eubank, Roger Bernal and Vinny Mejia off Diablo starter Chandler Barnard. A bases loaded walk to Ryan Normoyle made it 1-0, then a sac fly by Roger Bernal made it 2-0.

But El Paso scored six runs in the first off starter David Mueller and reliever Scott Elitzky, who combined for five

So many people have reached out to us and are excited for the season to start. 2012 was not all for lost, it gave the community and league a chance to really figure things out and we have done that. The City of Roswell has been great in all aspects. We have buried NMMI Field use for good, they wanted us to help install fieldturf and that won"t happen. We are playing at Joe Bauman Field. We are excited to have Chris Ebright as manager and we have a great support staff. The Community leaders have asked us to make certain adjustments and have an expectation level from the coaches and the players in the Community those will be followed."

Attendence was much lower as a result of an avalance of problems with hotels, coaches and confusion lead to an off season of regrouping. Many of the original fans turned against the team. With Pecos League spring training now less than a month away, managers are finalizing their rosters, and we’ll take a look at each team, one day at a time. The one thing all coaches have confidence about is their players will be ready when the season starts.

ROSWELL

Roswell manager Chris Ebright was one of two Pecos League managers not able to attend the Pecos Spring League — he was busy coaching the Kentucky Wesleyan College team — but he still got some top players from the Houston competition, and is confident they’ll fit in with the rest of his roster.

“I’m excited with the guys we have,” Ebright said. “I think all around, we’ll have some good options to ring a competitive team to Roswell. We’ve got guys who can do it all. We’ve got 18 pitchers coming to camp. I’ve got a handful of guys at each position and we’ll go from there.”

The Invader manager’s top pick was Scott Elitzky, a left-handed pitcher from Lander University via Su

ROSWELL — When fans go to a baseball field to watch a game, one thing they rarely think about is the condition of the field. But the groundskeepers who keep the field in playing shape are as much a part of the team as the pitchers, hitters and managers.

Charlie Ward, who coaches the New Mexico Military Institute high school baseball team, is also the head groundskeeper for the Roswell Invaders. As a coach, he knows how important it is to have a well-manicured field.

“You want that kind of field because you want to have a little pride in your field and you want your players to have a little pride in it,” he said. “That is important because of the playing surface. You want to have the true hops. The true ground balls, but also just any kind of field, when you take care of it, you want it to be first class. You want it to be as best as what they give you with the facilities they give you. You want it to be the best in the league, if that’s what you’re trying to do.”

And that’s what Ward ha

According to the Pecos League Web site, 115 players have moved up to bigger teams after competing in the independent league in its first two seasons. While moving up at all is a huge accomplishment, five former Pecos League players have advanced to teams affiliated with major league ball clubs.

Former Invader Charlie Short is one of those, and he is getting ready to head to Tampa, Fla., for his second season as a member of the Yankee organization.

After a stellar season as a short reliever with Roswell in 2012 — he had an ERA of 0.60 through 15 innings, with one win and 28 strike outs — it was clear Short was destined for bigger and better things. And in late July, he was picked up by the Yankees and sent to the Charlston, S.C. Riverdogs, a Low Class A team in the South Atlantic League.

For the 6-foot right hander, it was a dream come true made possible by his time with the Invaders.

ROSWELL Stories abound in sports of teams going from first to worst, and while that wasnt exactly the case in the Pecos League last year, Roswell (which finished fourth) had a really tough sophomore season.

We had a rough year, no doubt about it, said league commission Andrew Dunn. No doubt about it, (Roswell was) the Pecos Leagues best team in 2011. You open the first ever Pecos League, you beat the El Paso Diablos. You win the regular season. You win the first round of the playoffs you win a tightly contested series with Alpine. Then you beat Ruidoso in the championship. You win it all. Everything goes your way. Players are doing fine. Players are getting moved up and everything is going great. We come into this season in 2012, and to say the wheels fell off the wagon would be an understatement.

Without going into all the sordid details, on and off the field problems led to a less than stellar season. But this year, Dunn said, the Invaders are ready to rebound.

I knew I needed to get a person in Roswell who was top-of-the-line manager, in line with a Bill Moore or Casey Dill, the commissioner said. That was what we were looking for, and that was going to be the receipe to get this thing back. We needed somebody who could get along with people. Who could pay attention and thy could get in a good team. We needed to completely start over from there.

With that in mind, Dunn hired Chris Ebright

Chris Ebrights the guy, he said. I feel very strongly about Chris. Hes here for the right reasons, and I think when he came to visit, I think people liked Chris.

I think fans are going to like the roster thats put together, and I think theyre going to like the attitude of the coaches. Both Chris Ebright and (assistant manager) Kevin Dore are Michigan guys. Theyve got great attitudes and theyre easy to get along with. And thatd what we need. We need somebody who can interact with the community and talk to people and get along. And thats what everybodys asked me to do.

And while Ebright might disagree managers always want to win everything Dunn said all hes looking for is some of the on- and off-the-field success Roswell saw in 2011.

Were just trying to get back to where we were, he said. Were not trying to set any new standards. If we can have a season like 11, everybody would love it. The leagues a lot tougher. Its not going to be easy for a team to just run through the league.

Dunn also stressed that Roswells future has nothing to do with the Las Cruces Vaqueros, a two-season team that was dropped from the league this year.

The fans have asked me to get this thing back the way it was in 2011. To completely wipe 2012 off the board and thats what Im doing and were moving forward. Were glad to be there. Its not a one-year experiment. Theres no connection between Las Cruces and Roswell.

With San Diego moving its AAA team to El Paso in 2014, Dunn said the future of the Vaqueros and the El Paso Diablos is limited, but every other team in the Pecos League will continue.

Were there to stay. Everywhere were there, were there to stay, he said.

Last years problems drove both the fans and sponsors away, but Dunn said the sponsors are already returning, and he hopes the fans will, too.

Were going to invite everybody back, and whoever comes back comes back, he said. We really are appreciate of the support we get from the churches, from Lovelace, from the UFO Museum and all of our sponsors. Were excited to be there.

And with some games scheduled to be played In Artesia (the dates havent been set yet) Dunn hopes to expand the Invader fan beyond Chaves County.

Were just going to have fun with it, he said of the games in the top-flight Artesia high school stadium. Well just tell our players they have to come back to Coke Park after the game.

After a preseason exhibitions vs. the El Paso Diablos in El Paso May 10, the Invaders open the season May 14 at home vs. the Las Vegas Train Robbers.
